There are a few moving parts with this offer that I think make it an even better deal than it might appear at first glance. So, to summarize it all:

--Castrol Edge Euro 5W-40 (5 qt jug) regular price at O'Reilly: $37.99

--Current sale price: $34.99

--Net price after $15 O'Reilly gift card for each jug purchased: $19.99

--On top of that, they are giving 2x O'Reilly points ($5 gift card for every 150 points) if you have an account there.

Both the rebate money and the points rewards can only be used at O'Reilly, which would likely be a big negative for many. But given that the Microgard Select is now one of the few trusted filters on BITOG, the fact that the rebate and points are captive isn't such a big problem.

For example:

--Purchase 3 x 5qt jugs of Castrol Edge Euro 5W-40 at the sale price: $104.85

--Rebate: 3 x $15 = $45 (Rebate is submitted online-- fairly painless)

--Points = 104; 2x makes that 208, of which 150 will yield a $5 reward (points awarded immediately, reward code is emailed)

--Total cash back from those three jugs is $50 (and you would still have 58 remaining points to apply to a future reward). Note that gift cards don't expire and the reward expires in 90 days. So, there is time to wait for deals on the filters.

--Applying the $50 exclusively to Microgard Select filters, you would get the following for free depending on filter sale prices (which are regularly offered):

----At the full filter price of $9.99, $50 yields 5 free filters

----At a 10% discount price of $8.99, $50 yields 5.5 free filters

----At a 20% discount price of $7.74 (which is actually available now if you have an order of $100), $50 yields 6.5 free filters

So, depending on the filter discount available, that's between 5 and 7 free (and excellent) filters to be had for just buying 3 jugs of very good oil!

Looking at the net price (with the free filter folded into the oil price), the final price of the oil comes out to $18.28 per 5 qt jug.

That's getting pretty close to the Euro L Amazon deal (without all the drama involved in that deal), so I jumped on it myself. I bought 7 jugs and will be looking to get 16.5 free Microgard Select filters as soon as I get the rebate money and see a 20% online discount code.

With that level of purchase (plus 127 points I have left over from previous purchases), the net cost of the oil for me is $17.81 per 5 qt jug-- again, that's in the ballpark of the Amazon Euro L deal and uses up those old points before they expire.

I'm thinking that @Glenda W. specifically might be interested in this opportunity for a free MGS filter haul! :D

Thanks for figuring this all out!! Might just take advantage.

You just have to have use for Castrol oil.

Although I've followed all your great work here on filter quality, I'm not sure what oil you prefer.

But if Castrol is a brand you'd use anyway, then stock up and grab them free filters!

Just to close this thread out:

The rebate money on the 7 x 5qts of Castrol Edge Euro 5W-40 that I bought on this promotion has come in, and it the total was $125 (rebate + rewards points).

Has to wait a couple of days for a "20% off online orders" deal to come up for the filter purchase, and not only did that happen, but there was also a 3x points promotion on MGS filters that also came up, which netted me another $10 off.

So, I got all this for a total of $237.52!

OReilly Oil-Filter Haul.webp

At Walmart, 7 jugs of this oil + 16 TG filters (lowest cost filter WM has that comes close to the MGS) would have cost $287.76.

Heck, 7 jugs of ST 5W-30 + 16 Fram orange cans (cheapest filter they have with a silicone ADBV) would have cost $183.80, only 54 bucks less than I spent for Euro + MGS!

It is true that auto parts stores are generally non-competitive on oil/filters compared to Walmart or Amazon. But they do occasionally have really good promotions, so if you look for those and are able to use the rewards at that store (e.g., my using the O'Reilly rewards points to get the filters I wanted in the first place), then it is possible to beat them both on price.

Sure did in this case!
