Anyone here install gutter guards on their house?

Depending on the time of year, my gutters can fill up in a week. There's a big shade tree who's canopy covers most of my house. I opted to do without any gutter guard. My house is a ranch with a walkable roof. Cleaning with a leafblower is a breeze.

I've heard too many stories like the ones above, and I also heard that litter still makes its way into the gutter. When the gutters need cleaning, they're much more difficult to clean with the shields.

If my house was multi-story or had a high-pitched roof, I'd rethink it.

Seems like every time I go to a home show or expo of some sort these companies practically attack you when you walk past their booth.

My yard is heavily wooded so I definitely would get good use out of them.

Are any companies better or worse than others?? Better or worse designs? Any do it yourself kits that work well? Thanks, Tom


CR tested both DIY & 'Pro' gutter screens in a previous issue. If I remember right, DIY won out due to the cost of labor & materials to pay someone else.

I have to have gutters due to drainage problems. Very effective in expanding your vocabulary in a profane direction. I've used the cheap vinyl guards at home centers and the metal ones as well. What works for me won't necessarily work for you.

I'm guessing NOVA is North Virginia? So you probably have snow, ice, etc? None of that here. Big leaves are easy to deal with compared to small leaves or pine-needles. I'd buy depending on leaf size, if your trees produce tiny seeds (like some of mine do). Most importantly, decide if you really need them first, then do you need them everywhere or just in certain places?
