Anyone here ever run a smaller than spec filter?

I've started to use CQP 84502 (FL500s size) instead of Motorcraft FL820s on my Ford 5.4. They seem to have less tendency to leak down past the adbv, causing less start rattle if sitting for days between starts.

I think that is only true at the extremes. I do 5K OCIs with filter swaps at every other service.
And I use good filters.
Well if you never run filters to the limits, you’ll never see any difference. But it’s still true that less media means shorter life, it’s just irrelevant for you because it’s still sufficient life.

Cars are expensive. I take care of them because I am a cheapskate.
I also tend to pass my cars onto friends and family. So I end up servicing them anyways.

Same, I keep them long times. I’ve sold or otherwise passed along two vehicles since 2006.

I don’t have the desire or money to horse trade vehicles.

I’ll be running a filter that’s about 10% shorter soon, but it’s for the Fit that hardly has anything in the filters I’ve had cut. Effectively a PG4612EX made for Service Champ. Not such a big drop, but I got a case of 12 under the belief they had fully synthetic, nylon backed media. Turns out it’s like the PG EX media, but for my needs the difference in media or filter height doesn’t matter in the end. I would never run the 25% shorter filter versions though.
