Anyone else have issues bringing your own oil?

I think oil is not a large issue. However the filter itself can lead to liability issues if it fails.

Interestingly when my Subaru WRX was under warranty and I used dealer occasinally for $25 oil changes (conventional) the dealer would ask if I had synthetic that most WRX/STI owners would bring in. I just used bulk fill anyway.

I remember my first new car had "free" oil changes for life(of dealer apparently) just not filter. They would charge $7 for honda filter or you could show with your own. I did get suckered a few times into "lubricate the brake slides" for $30. I think that was the scam to get their money back.

filter comming apart? well i have to admit i know a LOT less than you guys. how ever i do wander why no one said anything about oil pressures, ie, filter comes apart at xxx psi. or the reg oil pressure for a 5.9 Cummins is this or that.

The 2 different Ford dealers my wife & I bought our vehicles from had no problem if we brought our own oil and filter in. They discounted the oil change service by about $5. They loved it!

My mechanic's shop charges $30 whether you bring in your own oil & filter or use their unknown oil & filter. The local nonbranded tire dealer charges $30 using Kendell syn blend & a mystery filter. If you bring your own oil & filter in they charge $16. They really give the vehicle a good going over and let the oil drain for a long time. They lube and fill the wiper fluid. They'd do the transmission but there is no dip stick, which is fine with me. I also asked them to not open the differentials but let me know if there is a leak. I watched them do the service. Best $16 my brittle old bones can spend

I'm going to look into this next time I go in for an oil change. I go to a Toyota indy and since it's been maybe 2 years since I asked about the oil, I'm going to ask what they are now using. If I want something better/different, I'll see how they take my request.

I just did it last week at Kauffman Tire. Brought my own oil and filter. Even brought in a drain plug. They charged me $11.61 ($10 for labor and $1.61 for disposal/taxes). They usually charge $55 for a full synthetic change + $15 for the cartridge filter.

Based on the replies, it seems that I should try to find somewhere cheaper than $30 for labor only (I believe that's about what Walmart charged me). Or I could start doing it myself, but concerned about warranty implications.

Truth be told, I'm surprised any place would allow this due to liability. Too easy for someone to claim the garage caused damage to the part they brought in, waiver or not. In fact, I'd bet that the cost of a new engine would be less than a lawyer's fees to defend against something like this.

Listen to "Click & Clack" on NPR and you'll invariably hear a question along the lines of "I took my car in for a new muffler and now I have an oil leak, did the garage cause this?" Chances are you won't have to wait long to hear one.....

My mechanic doesn't mind if I bring my own in. I asked first he doesn't mark up his oil and filters that much over his cost. I just shop for oil sales so the car gets many different oils depending on the rebates.
