I really want to build one outdoors stand alone. Not a tiny thing like the Costco model. Just thinking how good it makes me feel.

It's only a mind picture now. But seat 4 comfortably, maybe more. But I am largely ignorant. LP tank near, but I will need electricity for lights, I suppose. Water is near as well.

Do they make LP rock heaters?

I haven't looked for plans or kits or anything, have not even googled.

I'm sure hecklers will respond, but has anyone built a steam sauna?

Indoor or outdoor?
Don't forget the drains.
For all the saunas I saw in Scandinavia, I never thought to ask if they were professionally installed or home made.
My money's on professioanlly done in the vast majority of cases because one's home insurance is too involved with electric, plumbing, heating elements and increased visitor traffic.

Several were dedicated separate buildings.
I'd bet wood fired examples would have to be in a separate building.

Anyone remember the small ones Costco sold?

Just keep in mind that "steam with rocks" grew out of imitating how it was done in the olden days.
Ergo, design efforts were expended to 'look old fashioned'. That can be wasteful.
NOTE: You sure don't need rocks in a modern, electric setup.

While I do not know which is better, I sure would look into what's new in technology.
How long has IR tech for saunas been out?

Who's to say stupid design decisions weren't made in an effort to look more modern?
Think of all the stupid car stuff through the years.
Thankfully, sauna design can only be so complex.
