Some Where Out There
Alright a quick story then a question...I was out about a week ago driving my truck hard. And i noticed my gas guage was down (The fuel light was on.) Anyway all of a sudden while ripping on it i'm at 4,000 RPM's and the motor bogs down and comes back. Well what i'm thinking is that i starved the truck of fuel for a split second.

So my question....Do u think i could of hurt anything in the motor? It runs fine, but my idle is a little more jumpy. I think also maybe some sediment in the gas tank clogged up my fuel filter a little. What do u think? Thanks!

I doubt anything bad happened, probbaly plugged the fuel filter if anything. Change that, run some Fuel Power, or other fuel system cleaner, and you're good to go.

When you accelearate or turn one way or the other, gas moves to one side of the tank. Depending on where you gas pickup is located, one of those actions will uncover you gas pickup when you are low on gas. Then your pump sucks fumes momentarily and you engine loses power.

It's generally not a good idea to do that very often. A few times should have no effect on your truck.

Based on your description, you don't need to do anything except keep a bit more gas in your truck.

Just be glad that didn't happen while you were passing someone on a two lane road.

Aren't gas tanks baffled to prevent that? I am afraid the problem may be worse than a clogged fuel filter. Some crud may have been stirred up and made it to a fuel injector.

Not really. It just turns one massive energy wave into a bunch of little ones. The fuel will still end up away from the pick up if it's low enough and enough G-force wants to send it somewhere else.

I've had it happen a few times. Not a biggie in my experience.

XS650-Ya i did learn to keep mroe fuel in tank now, If i ever see that fuel light its going straight to the gas station. I'm also glad it didn't happen while i was passing somebody on a 2 lane road, That would have been ugly...

Thanks everybody! I'm just going to go pick up a new fuel filter that way i know it is clean.

The cost I was refering to was the difference in stopping at a gas station every two days and getting five dollars worth of gas, or stopping once a week and filling up.

The difference of cost in reference to the weight of a full fuel tank verses a fuel tank at a quarter full, would be miniscule, less than what could be measured by normal means. Unless your driving a tank truck hauling gasoline.

And I guess as long as I am in for a penny I might as well go for the whole pound. Why is 87nissan worrying about "hurting his engine"?

Well i was worried about the high RPMs then all of a sudden no RPMs then back back to high RPMS. BTW it was midnight when i did this and I was planning on putting gas into it in the morning. Stupid winter gas burns thorugh the truck faster.

Now now... in theory, your gas mileage goes up with a lighter vehicle. Then again, gas is what? 7 lbs a gallon?
So even with a Chevy Suburban and 40 gallons in dual tanks, you're talking... what? 280 pounds? and less than half that in a regular car...
