I want to hear about these oils.. Syntec's 5w40 has good manufacturer approvals, the same viscosity as M1 0w40 but seems like it would not shear as bad. The 5w50 just looks interesting.
Usually 90% percent of the Audis and VW that come into the shop use Castrol Syntec 5w40. It's a popular oil for these cars and they seem to run on it fine maybe needing a litre top up in between.
5w50 weve used in high mileage Ford Trucks and usually give it to the older Land Rovers. Some Roush Mustang came in and that's the recommended oil for it.
The 5w40 is nothing spectacular from VOAs and UOAs I have seen, I would choose Rotella any day of the week. I would rather use Mobil 1 15w50 instead of the syntec 5w50.
I used the 15W50 Mobil 1 EP in the same boat. Good stuff too and I do like it better than the Syntec. Just wish it was 5W50, but 15 will work, better than 20......

Hey killagt, getcha a jug of Mobil 1 15W50. It`s a "thinner" 50 wt oil,and if you`re wanting to run a lil heavier of an oil,it`s some awesome stuff! Plus a jug of it is cheap at Walmart.
I've had good results with the 5w-50. It's a smooth running oil. Had to sub mobil 15w-50 today though because wal-mart didn't have any 4/5 qt jugs in stock.
from what I can see... its cold viscosity (40C = 87.6cSt).. it seems like it is the ONLY 50wt oil that has decent cold viscosity!!
WAY thinner than RL's 5w50, even thinner at startup than RTS5w40.
I find it hard to believe that Castrol was able to make an oil with such a great (beautiful) spread using all GroupIII, I think it has to have some Group IV in it.
I used SYNTEC 5W-50 to control burning in an old, previously abused Honda Civic I had, and provide decent cold starting. It burned only slightly less than Mobil1 10W-30, but other than that, I can't say I noticed any difference between 5W-50 and other, lighter weights of oil...
