My Yaris with 4k on the oil is not getting proper cold flow anymore in the -10 - +10F starts its been exposed to this past 2 weeks (subjective assessment). I think the oil prob would not meet 20w-XX spec. Thats what it feels like. I know in API certification testing the lab performs a cold pumpability or MRV after seq IIIg but cant recall spec. limits ... Thinking it was -20 or -25 C test. Nothing used in the past 3 winters has seemed this bad.

I know for SM/GF-4 an oil has to stay within the limits for it's SAE grade as far as CCS/MRV goes.

Arco, maybe it's not your oil. A worn out battery will cause weird things to happen in the cold, especially OEM batteries, which don't have very good specs.

We've never had a car that sounded like a well oiled machine when it starts at 10 below!

What specific oil are you running?

Oops, 5w30 Shell.

If you're that concerned about it, try a 0w-30. Or experiment with 5w30 synthetics.

I will say that Synpower 5w30 has made my mom's valvetrain clatter considerably quieter.

AC Delco PF1233 - the older style ones made my Corolla so noisy even my mom noticed it. Do you know if the one you have is the newer style Champ with the blue spring loaded bypass valve? Those are quiet on my car.

Rellay about stay in w grade used? I read something about -25c after sequence iiig - ill have to go to API site and read. FA the Delco goes, there is a blue plastic cap at the bypass end visible through the opening. The oil has been noisy through 2 filter changes though - same oil. The filter previous was an even noisier (warm start) NAPA pro select with combo valve. I usually run wix 53196 larger camry filters. The oil feel REALLY thick. Engine is knocky for a couple minutes not just clattery. OP light goes out witin a sec or two. Thick Unlike anything run in the past years. Maybe they forgot the PPD. I guess I shouldnt buy oil at Walgreens

Isn't synthetic supposed to flow better cold, even with the same cold viscosity rating and pour points? Don't meant to hijack...

I highly doubt they forgot the PPD's in your oil! LOL!

Arco, have you even considered putting a block/oil pan heater on your cars? When I use mine on my Cavalier, I notice the piston slap that affects this engine is less pronounced, or not audible.

Just an idea, might help the start-up knock in your engines....
