I am talking about the old double edge safety razors that everyone used in the 60's. All these cartridges are getting ridiculous. $3 per cartridge or 5 blades for $1 with the old style. Just wondering if anyone here is using them or maybe in the same boat as me and considering giving them a try.

I have a couple the belonged to my grandfather during the war, given to me by dad. I use them every time I shave, which is ~2x/ month.

New-style razors are disposable junk, peddled by fancy commercials. The razors I am using are at least in their 60th year of operation, perform a closer shave, and cost much, much less to continue to use.

Well that settles it then. I am at least going to give them a try. Maybe I can score a nice looking set up on ebay. Thanks for the replies.

I use Gilletts DE, Gem Razors, Hoffritz slant, Muhl razors and a feather Stainless steel razor.

They all use DE razor blades with the exception of the Gem Razor which uses Single Edge Blades.

The plastic junk and multi-blade carts never appealed to me. Hair gets stuck between the blades and lots of razor burn and today....you'll also get burned with the price for the carts.

Most of the World still uses DE and Single Edge blades.....that should tell you something!

People refuse to get shafted and gouged by the cart makers when all the equipment that used to make all of the DE blades in the USA is now in Russia, Europe, India and the Far East.

Just because people in North America have more cash to spend, doesn't always mean they are stupid when it comes to shaving razors, blades, soaps, badger brushes etc....

My favorite razor at the moment is a 1910 Gillette Old style Open Comb razor. They are great to use for a nice 4 pass close shave. It's over 100 years old and still rocks.

In 1994 I got a huge bag full of plastic disposable razors on sale at a Price Club (Costco)or Thrifty Mart, and there are about ten left now. I have two old Gillette safety razors from 1971 and about three cartridges of blades, and I found you can get blades if you look for them. So I am razored up for the rest of my life.

Those "safety razors" aren't that safe, you can slice yourself but good with one of those things.

I use the Gillette Fusion, a little pricey but last a long time. I shave when showering and can get two months on one cartridge. I tried the more expensive ProGlide but couldn't notice any difference.

If you want save couple of dollars use the older Gillette Mach 3 Turbo, does the job but not nearly as good as the Proglide.

I guess I'm one of the "stupid" people. I've used safety razors in the past, but I don't like hacking chunks out of my face, so I use those contemptible throw-aways. I don't have a particularly tough beard, so they last me quite a while.

You need to learn how to shave.

To the OP: I've got four double edge razors I use in rotation: A Merkur (German), an Edwin Jagger (England), a Feather Stainless (Japan), and my trusty old Schick Krona that I purchased back in the 80s. Of the four, I prefer the Merkur and wind up using it much more often than the others. For blades, I only use Feather stainless.

Right, there is a reason safety razors are cheap. Modern multi-blade razors are one of those items well worth the cost in my opinion.

If they seem expensive you can thank Federal Reserve money printing for driving up the price on everything.

Woops, meant to say Gillette Fusion, not ProGlide.

Ha, they manufacture these cheap carts in Asia and 3rd world nations for pennies and sell to the Americans for $4.00 a cart. IMO....they are worthless. Try and do a 3 or 4 pass shave with at least 1 pass against the grain.....impossible to get a" Baby Butt smooth" shave the carts.

Yup, Fusion blades are nice.

I've tried a safety razor in the past. I didn't cut myself, but my face was all red and burning afterwards. I guess I didn't have the right technique or my skin is just too darn sensitive.
I also had to stop using shaving soap and brush due to skin rash/allergy. Now it's just hand-applied Aveeno Therapeutic gel.

Somewhere, I still have a double edge safety razor that I bought at the PX back in the '80s

Maybe it was just the blades, but I never could get a good shave out of it. Felt like I was using one of those orange plastic single edge Bic disposable razors

I can't find it now but I did find an old shaving kit with a Gillette Atra razor.

I wonder if I can still get Atra cartridges
