I bought one today. STP ph8a style. I think it looks like it should flow well and work good IF the plastic center tube doesn't warp from heat.

I read some posts here and it seems that everyone is afraid to try them. Has anybody ran one?

The insides look very similar to the cartridge elements I have been using in my Ecotec for almost 3 years, 12 filters, 4 different brands, and no sign of problems. At room temperature, the plastic cage is stiffer than a metal tube.

Yea Autozone seems to be getting them in now.
I like how they have been able to make the filter shorter but have the same filter area it seems. Makes getting a filter for my Monza easier.
Seems like a really good design from what U have seen.

Sorry they don't make one for my application yet, otherwise I'd have one soon.

I haven't seen a ph8 style yet either. The only ones I've seen are the 3614/3600 style(same threads and gasket, larger filter dia.)

Ran one, dissected it, and posted pics here (valucraft 3614):

Used eCore Post w/ pictures

I was initially worried about the end caps and the new combo AD valve/bypass, but I've pretty much convinced myself that those are not valid worries.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with them. I'm running a little experiment now, and will be having a UOA done in about 3-5k miles. I'm using an eCore filter during the experiment so that should (hopefully) put my last two worries fully at rest.

My 1986 washing machine has an all nylon transmission - case, gears - the works, except for the steel pinion shafts. I've never had the cabinet front off for so much as a belt replacement.

I replaced my eCore ST3614 (SuperTech) filter last week. It looks like it held up great. Now if I can just get Wal-Mart to keep them stocked on the shelves....

That's a problem here too. The ST selection has shrunk in the stores here, and the more popular filters tend to be out of stock half of the time (which includes the 3614...

) I talked to the wallyworld auto dept. manager a while back, and he said that they were having trouble selling the STs since the majority of the people purchasing filters at the registers in his department were buying Frams, and not the ST filters. As a result, the regional manager decided to increase shelf space to the filter that was selling.

I don't know if he knows what he is talking about, but I have to admit.. every time I'm on that isle.. there's usually someone buying one of the orange cans...

There's always Autozone...

Speaking of AZ... How do the Valucraft filters compare to the Supertech models? Is the media the same? From what I can tell, the construction looks equal, and if the media is the same, then I'll just start sticking to those since the ST's aren't being kept in stock as much as I would like (or I could just start stocking up on STs next time there's a few in stock..)

Time to raid WallyWorlds current supply of ST in all the sizes that I need.

Hmm ...let's get the rumor going ..or find it in truth ..maybe we can turn ST filters into an item like GC is to AutoZone.

It is a sad fact that people that care about their car pay almost $4 for the Fram over the cheap ST. It is not for lack effort on our part.

I dissected one with 5-6,000 miles onit and the endcaps are not what I would want to use for long OCI. If anyone wants to see pics, lmk, but I need a way to show them here as I'm not too sure myself.

Interesting. Which end of the element did the end cap fall apart? (base plate end or top of the can end?). How was the filter cut apart? Did the center nylon support come out or did you pull it out? Loads of questions from those pictures...

Keith ...please shrink those images

My gosh! I feel like I'm seeing one of those old Panavision® movies
lol.gif

..but ...it appears to me, due to all the fragmented pieces, that this was firmly attached just about everywhere.

With the filter element in the pics the end cap DIDN'T FALL APART, I wanted to see how easy it was to rip apart( I describe with more detail below). ALL of the pieces( Anti-drain back and by pass valve sliped out VERY easy!!)
I opened it up with a air cut-off tool as I was at work

Which reguards to the center piece it just slipped out when the valve and anti-drain back come off.
I will say one thing the "cardboard" looking endcaps are not cardboard but were very soaked right through with the oil....so I don't know about it. It also seems to rip apart easy as I did it by hand to separate the endcap material.
Thanks T-Keith for showing them!!

Any other questions just ask as I'll answer them as fast and as best as I can.
