Is there a way to tell if oil is made of dino or PAO etc...

Not many makers are telling about base ... and on EU market almost none ...

You have to realise that most motor oils are "blends" with Gp2, Gp3, and maybe Gp4 in order to obtain the desired results?

While some oil manufacturers may provide as much details about their base oil as possible, that may not be the case for some.

Q.

I was a chemist and Mass Spec Analysis is the test that would break the actual carbon bonds and give a read out of the base and content.

The other way is for a governmental agency to mandate labeling of all contents including bases.

To answer your question..yes it can be done...why is it not...probably effective lobbying by rich oil companies?

Nah never..

Many colleges and most universities have the equipment to do this. If you know a student or someone in the chemsitry department, it can be done, BUT, YOU COULD NEVER TALK ABOUT IT, NEVER REPORT ON BITOG. You would, for your own satisfaction, know for sure

One of the easier, but unreliable ways of telling is by looking at the Noack volatility. PAO/Ester based oils are usually under 8%.

Why?

Are you of the (generally incorect) opinion that there is some "value proposition" when it comes to the basestock???

The posters above are correct... there are hints, but most any oil is a blend of oils.

The question really is, which oil gives the best UOA for YOUR engine, YOUR driving style and YOUR situation???

Coz (lemme burst some bubbles here) the stigma calls for pure GpX oil base to be far superior than, say, blends.

Funny thing is, in order to meet most engine manufacturer's specs these days, modern day engine oils are mostly in the form of a blend of various base stocks to achieve the desired results.

Mass Spec ? Heck no, I 'can't' afford a UOA.

I use inferential analysis. To me basestock 'does' matter. Shell VHVI vs S-Oil GrpIII...well you can have the S-Oil, I'll take the VHVI.

Is one better after blend/add pack ?
I'll never know nor do I care since both will do the job.

At the 'same' price, I'll take my risk with a better base...

It has to do with licensing, attorneys, lawsuits, and all sorts of legal stuff. :no-no: It may even cause offensive body odor.
