Any value in a first generation iPad Air?

Haven’t used it regularly for a while, but we’re on a trip and I realized I can’t see embedded images on most websites. Didn‘t realize I’ve had it since 2013. I knew AT&T dropped the cellular service for it a long time ago. It appears it’s too far behind to get any updates. Is it pretty much obsolete?

If it can't get iOS (and security) updates, I wouldn't use it. I can't think of what the average person would use it for that didn't require internet access and I'd not use anything online-related unprotected.

I have a couple old iPads as do my in-laws. I guess it has some value to someone but there are so many obsolete iPads around that they can't be worth much.

The lightning port went completely bad on mine 5 or 6 years ago. It was still decent for surfing the web at that point but wasn't worth messing with the port since it is soldered to the board. When I replaced it the Airs didn't seem worth it like they did on the first gen ones.

Apple allows trade in when buying a new iPad. I bought the new Mini; they offered to recycle and dispose my early iPad. Not sure what model it is, but it is worthless to Apple.

As a connected internet device, it's obsolete.

As a local media player, perfectly fine.

Local shop here has an old iPad mounted to the wall, which serves as their jukebox for ambient music.

Load it up with music or video and stick it in the garage, or wherever; doesn't matter if the battery is spent, nor any worry about it being cooked by being plugged in all the time. The screen ratio isn't optimal for video, but serviceable. But it will hold days and days of music.

How do they get music on it ? I know you can connect them to a computer, but I'll put money on it, 90% of iPhones or iPads have never been connected to a computer.

Thanks all, thinking there might be looking for a new tablet soon. This one might be OK for watching movies on a plane.

True, but it's easy, and if you don't rent your music like most folks do nowadays, the only way to go.

One thing to keep in mind…..if you have an old iPad and use third party apps, don’t do a factory reset or even remove apps if you Intend to use them again.

I found I could use Netflix, etc…on my old iPad but I did a factory reset to start fresh and none of the 3rd party apps would install, as they were no longer supported.

It might be hard to get any apps to work.

I successfully re-purposed a second gen iPad as a live security camera feed. Turned out very clean and worked great, but that was years ago since I sold the house. No clue if it still works or not.

Exactly this. I work in Cybersecurity and I'd never use a device that didn't have software support.
