Any thoughts on PEAK oil?

cheesepuffs - Ahh, that makes sense. I was just over-analyzing the wording I guess. And yes, haha, the good ol' Camaro likes its Pennzoil conventional. My parents bought it brand new in 1989 off the floor, and my mom drove it to work until 1994. It's all original, only 50k miles, and is a great show car. It'll leave a one tire fire mark for a good 50+ feet if you know how to do it, lol. We get it out every summer and take it to car shows.

SwedishRider - I'm sorry, I misunderstood your post. I thought you were just generalizing about the 10w-40... lol, I live in a small town (less than three thousand people) and our DG carries more STP oil than it does its own DG brand. I can't believe DG would sell that [censored] without a big warning sticker. Anyway, I only buy API spec SM and SN... I'd never get anything older. On another laughable note, I saw some SL spec oil on the shelves of a local K-mart, but it seriously had been sitting there, on that shelf, since SL spec was still in service! It was layered in dust lmao!

Nice man, I'd love an F-Body Camaro. Not too many of 'em with low mileage anymore, or many that have been well taken care of at all unfortunately... Have fun with it.

Thanks. We definitely take good care of it. And yes it's true that not many of them have low miles any more. BTW it's a T-Top, too. Wonderful summer car.

Is your 305 throttle-body-injection or a tuned-port-injection? Our Camaro is only a 305 TBI, and I druel about my cousin's Camaro with the 305 TPI.

Mine is TBI. In fact no trucks were TPI, only the cars. Is the difference between the two that noticeable in the Camaro platform?

Oh heck yah, there is a big difference, lol. The 305 TBI is the Chevy LO3, and the 305 TPI is the Chevy LB9.

(these are all 1989 camaro ratings)
The LO3 produced 170-hp@4400 and 255-lb/tq@2400 in both the auto-4spd and man-5spd
The LB9 produced 195-hp@4000 and 295-lb/tq@2800 in the same auto-4spd, and then
The LB9 produced 220-hp@4400 and 290-lb/ft@3200 in the same man-5spd, and lastly
The LB9 produced 230-hp@4600 and 300-lb/ft@3200 in a different man-5spd.

*[same] auto-4spd w/2.73 --- [same] man-5spd w/3.08 --- [different] man-5spd w/3.45 --- rear axle; all berg-warner*

So yah, my cousin's got a manual 305 TPI... And I (my parents) have a 305 TBI (auto).

The brand started off as an engine coolant with a picture of a snow covered mountain peak on the bottle.

Wow, I didn't realize there was that big of a difference. Well my TBI is mated to a 5 speed manual and is rated at 175 HP and 270 Lbs-Ft, so take that!

That is a truck's advantage, tuned for torque. Lol. So you got me there. OTOH, my 01 F-150 has 260 hp and 350 ft-lbs/tq. Take that

PEAK Oil got it's name out in the market by offering some serious rebates. OR, the stores selling PEAK Oil were offering the rebates. I got 30qts of PEAK 5W30 and 6 ProLine Oil Filters from PEPBOY's free after rebate(FAR) and I was hooked on PEAK Oil.

Now, I look for PEAK Oil on sale w/coupons and other discounts. It's blended by WPP/WNE(same as SuperTech, ProLine and others). So, $3.60 seems a bit high as BigLot's has it for $3.50 and often store coupons and BUZZ Club Saving for members.

I would probably buy W*M ST at $12.** for the 5qt jug before buying PEAK at $3.60/qt though, it's a good oil and you'll do fine at that price too
smile.gif
But, there are other oils for that price at W*M that you may want to consider. And, while you're at W*M, you'll need filters too and DG doesn't have them.

Peak is not the same as the private label oils produced by Warren Distribution. It is closer to Accel than the private labels.

Yah I know I'll need a filter, and Walmart is probably the best place to get them. And, I totally understand now that the Super Tech would be a better "deal" than would the Peak, but I guess I really just wanted to use Peak because I've never tried it before. In all reality, I'm sure either one would perform equally well in the Explorer, as we usually change her oil every 3-5k anyway, and my mom babies that car... Unlike my father and I; we drive with a little heavier foot in our vehicles than does my mom. So, what I'm saying is, if it came down to saving money I'd buy Super Tech, but since the oil change is still going to be under $25 with any of the said 3 oils (Peak, Pennzoil conventional, or SuperTech) - as the filter is less than $5 and all those oils are under $20 for 5 quarts - I may as well try out the Peak for the sake of it.

Yeah I mean you really can't go wrong. They're all API SN so none of them are going to cause any harm, so if you wanna try Peak just out of curiosity then go for it. I wouldn't use it for the price you're gonna pay, but it's not like you're spending my money.

Lol, I agree, and totally understand that I'm contradicting the "most bang for the buck" rule. But I don't get many chances to experiment with brands of oil, so the Explorer in this case is the go-to car to do so, because my mom has another vehicle that's newer and better that she drives. It's a 2005 Lincoln Aviator, for which I gave a dose of Mag1 Full Sythetic 5w-40. She drives the Lincoln in the winter, Explorer in the summer (changing cars between fall and spring). I wouldn't experiment on that beauty (the Lincoln).

95% of the time, my mom babies the Explorer anyway. The other 5% the Explorer was pushed beyond it's limits (still being babied by my mom's light foot, though) when she towed a hay-rack with ~40 bails of hay from out of town (she has horses). To be fair, we only went about 5 or so miles with it, but I was surprised at how well it pulled all that weight (which I know had to have been exceeding the limit of the towing capacity). For an OHV 4.0 v6 to pull a full hay-rack is amazing. Nonetheless, with the majority of its life with my mom behind the wheel, and for how short an OCI we do on it (3 to 5k), I doubt experimenting with oil brands (all of which sporting current API ratings) will be of any harm.

Correct. Won't be any problem at all.

Thanks for the info everyone. I believe I will go ahead and try out the Peak. Won't be til Spring that I get around to changing the oil, though.

That's great advice. Make it a point to check the price anytime you're in a store that sells Peak because you never know. I had no idea that I was gonna find Quaker State Conventional for $2.59 a quart at Kmart of all places, but I did and I bought accordingly. Good sales on oil come up when you least expect it.

Well, I guess I should have said "pending my parents approval" seeing as it isn't my car. My mom, or even my dad, may tell me to just buy Pennzoil, lmao. In any case, yes, I see why it would be smarter and wait for any deals to pop up. I will keep a look out for deals in my area until its time to change her oil. And, I don't think my parents would actually mind me using Peak, considering they know how I've stared at my computer for hours on end researching oil... Not just this post, and not just BITOG (though BITOG has been a great source), but also factual info on how oil is refined and produced, what the additives do, and that in the end, if its API spec'd and up to date, it's clearly an adequate oil.

I looked at AutoZone... I didn't like what they were offering. If they included Motorcraft filters and not Fram, I'd bite. I rarely ever use the word 'hate' ... but I hate Fram. They're [censored] filters that I wouldn't even put on my lawn mower, let alone a car.
