I just picked up this black beauty last week, 302 4 bbl, mild cam, 10-1 compression, headers, Edelbrock manifold...
Guy I bought it off of used 10 w 40 Castrol , I like the Castrol part but 10-40 seems too thick to me.
Oh motor was rebuilt 5 years ago & driven 2000 miles since ..
Thanks for any advice , I'm thinking 5-30 or 10-30 but not sure what brand..

No question in my mind that this engine would LOVE GC 0W-30...you'd have the Castrol part you like, a 30 wt that is ALMOST a 40W AND you would have the magic of the Elves...sounds like a winner to me. Whatever you choose enjoy that sweet engine.

Scali62 just keep in mind if this engine has the original seals and gaskets a pao or diester synthetic will cause leaks. A great oil for this engine would be HAVOLINE HIGH MILAGE or VALVOLINE MAXLIFE , i would use 10w30 all year long.

If the cam kit has heavy valve springs I'd run something with high ZDP like 5w40 M1 or Rotella. I'd avoid an SM/GF4 oil with the flat tappet cam and ball type rocker arm pivots.

I'm assuming with a mild cam he doesn't have high valve spring pressure. My vote is for Rotella T 5w40 anyways though, the bearing clearance is much higher on those older motors and they should be treated appropriately.

If it were mine, I'd have Mobil 1 15W50 in it. If I didn't want to run a synthetic, I'd use 15W40 Mobil Delvac 1300 or Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50 in it.

Wow, thanks for the great replys.
I have to find out more on what exactly was done to this motor when it was rebuilt.
I'm not sure if it has original seals or cam kit has heavy duty springs or flat tappet cam or what.
Some good suggestions here, thanks..
Alan

I would go with a Redline offering - either their 10/40 or the 10/30, which is what I'm using in my 70 Mach 1/351C4V. Lots of moly present which can't hurt with a flat tappet engine.
