Any recommendations for a wireless router?

VIZIO makes a nice router that is available at many places. Its actually 3 wireless access points in one router. One for the older stuff (b & g) one for the newer stuff (n) and one for the newer media (dual band n). They default to share the same subnet so if the PC was on one and the printer on another they could easily communicate. The security is already setup, the keys are printed in the guide (assume each guide is different) but you can also change any/all of that stuff.

The router issue has been adaquately discussed in the above posts....

My question is....WHY... do you want to have your son... have access to the internet....in his room (privately) ?

Do you realize the dangers in such a move? (I'm assuming he is a tween or teen). With all the porn, gambeling and other dangerous websites he can access....without you knowing it...Its not a wise parenting move...and I would suggest you reconsider this.

Most books and courses on parenting...warn against such a move...
and suggest that all children view computer content under the watchful eyes of their parents...in a place where the whole family is in and around.

I'm aware of this and I am not an idiot. Don't start assuming that everyone is ignorant. Thanks you for your concern too. First of all, his computer would require a USB wireless adapter. He would not get that unless we’re at home. We also use a software program that you have to use a password to access the internet. Also, he knows, his door stays open. Next issue is that there are times that my wife, son and I have to fight over the internet for legitimate reasons. Having the router would allow us all to have access at the same time.

If you have to lock up the internet to trust your kid what to do, you have failed parenting.

Seriously, which teen are not allowed to get on the net nowadays?

I've had unrestricted (mostly) internet access since I was 14 (almost 20 now) , and I turned out okay

Honestly as long as they know not to give out personal information online, and not to look up illegal stuff, the internet isnt' as dangerous as many less tech literate people believe.

Then again, I'm still young so I may be biased

Qualification: I am referring to teenagers, mostly those 13,14 +. Under that, I absolutely agree that supervision is required, as well as internet content block.

That's what you think.

Well, I don't drink (Well, maybe on holidays with my family), I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, I don't steal stuff, not part of a gang, I work and go to school, I pay for most of my own stuff, I do chores around the house to help out without being asked....

I babysit my brother and sister, take them to doctor and dentist appointments. I tend to stop and help if I see someone having car trouble. I respect my parents and other family members.

I feel my biggest failing is my lack of enthusiasm for Math.

Compared to a lot other people my age, I think I've done pretty well.

EDIT: apologies to OP for threadjacking

Math is beyond numbers and formulas. Its the ability to think logically. Useful most of the time, useless with female relationships. (I have a [censored] in Math).

Okay, you're the idiot here. You're making judgement without knowing my family or why we block the internet. Do you think it might be that we trust him, but have heard stories of youth and don't want to take any chances? I don't see any need to explain myself to you so since you're into making judgement without the facts, you have failed as a human. yOU NEED TO LEAVE NOW.

Weird thing is, I can look at almost anything and understand how it works. I Black holes? Don't get the quantum mechanics bit, but I understand. How a computer or car engine works is easy. A/C? Easy. I understand how things work, but not at the mathematical level. I suck at math, no matter how hard I try at it.

Too early to tell, kido. We are watching. Have you moved to Australia?

I personally love the WRT54G line of routers(they can be had for little), but your best bet for them would be on ebay. My current router is a Netgear WNR2000.

As with any router, I typically dump the stock OS/Firmware as they are horrible slow. If you are even somewhat good at following directions and know how to use a computer then try DD-WRT or Tomotoe firmwares.

I do recommend the netgear, it's range is out of this world.
