I am installing a brass valve in copper plumbing (threaded 3/4") copper male fitting into brass threads. What is the best sealant to use on the threads to seal 80-120psi cold water line? It is for a yard irrigation system. I have tried teflon tape...still drips.

use teflon tape and pipe dope.

I'm not a pro but that has worked everytime for me.

3-4 wraps of tape in the proper direction with a light amount of pipe dope.

I have put in a whole lot of irrigation over the years, teflon tape should do the job IF you use enough wraps laid in the direction that the joint tightens.

I have used pipe dope, but found alone, it does not work as well as teflon tape.

No tape! I just use this stuff and it works every time:

Make sure it has the teflon in it. The stuff without the teflon (the grey type) has never worked for me.

replaced my outdoor faucet 2 years ago with just tape, no leaks. like others alluded to you probably wrapped the tape in the wrong direction, or used too much tape.

Hi, I'm a plumber! The tape and dope idea is good. I personally have had the best results with putting a thin coat of dope on the threads before the tape, making sure to get it into the root of the threads. Using a good grade of teflon tape, rather than the thin import stuff helps as well.

Edited to add: The tape needs to be wrapped in a clockwise direction, as some have already mentioned.

Here, people combust hemp. They'd never waste it as a naturally swelling sealant.
