I may purchase the following unit:

StreetPilot i5

Features I like: portability, color screen, easy to use, all maps preloaded, works on batteries or 12VDC, and is $400 on Amazon.com.

Does anyone have experience with one of these?

Can you recommend another unit?

Thanks in advence.

I have used the Garmin 76 model for years in my boat, but can hand carry it in the car if needed. I used to have the plain 76, but recently purchased the 76CS, which has the color map, barometer and altimeter. They are waterproof, durable and reliable. Joe

I have Delorne Mapping system on my Laptop.
I plug the matchbox size receiver in the USB port and go. I have really like the system and have been using it since 2000.

I already owned an HP Ipaq so I ended up buying CoPilot Live 6 from Travroute. I use it about 3-4 times per week for the last 3 years and it works great. Occasionally, addresses will be off, but that happens with all maps. Updates are typically released annually and cost about $50.

If I did not own a pocket pc, I would go with a dedicated unit like Garmin.

GPS Passion is a good sight that reviews GPS hardware and software.

Also have delorme plus laptop. Is very nice but one needs to pull over or have a co-pilot program the thing.

The handheld thingies seem like high theft risks if they're left permanently installed.

I use a small Garmin. It's nice on road trips to be able to find your way back to the exit ramp! I also mark the spots cops sit on the Turnpike for "reference". More bussiness should use their GPS coordinates to help people find them, like car dealerships and stuff.
