Any Good Sounding Diesel Engines?

Close 2nd is the VW TDIs, but that's only because I've owned several and I'm biased.

I hope you're not talking about the 4 banger TDI's........the 2.0 TDI in the Sportwagen in my sig I would not describe as sounding good. :ROFLMAO: Industrial sounding yes.....good no. The best sound it makes is the DI rattle at low speeds.

Personally I liked the 1.9PD noise with the muffler chopped off. It was full-throated on acceleration, nice turbo whistle especially in parking garages, and comfortably quiet on the expressways at 80+MPH.

Kind of almost a baby Cummins sound.

My little 1981 Rabbit Pickup is powered by a highly modified AAZ turbodiesel. I played with the exhaust for a while, but got the best sound I've ever heard. It suits me.

I'm partial to the little 2.5NA in my old Rover, it sounds like it should; honest, clattery and slightly annoying.

Aside from that, the Napier Deltic mentioned earlier is one of the most unique and enjoyable engine sounds I've heard, especially pulling hard. Honorable mention are whatever 3000hp EMD diesels power the M/V Island Home...just a soothing rumble that resonates through the ship. Put me to sleep on a few occasions, or maybe that was whatever I was doing in the island:-)

My 2004 VW Beetle TDI sounded adorable. I always would roll the windows down a little bit when in parking garages. Mini tractor.
