I've been keeping my eye open for any conventional 10w30 HDEO's in Canada, and so far the only one I've managed to find here in New Brunswick is the Motomaster 10w30. It's ratings are out of date, carrying CH-4/SJ on the label. Would that be sufficient for mid-90's cars, at the latest? See, my family aside from my brother aren't too keen on oil changes, so I usually end up doing them at my own expense. I don't mind really, to tell you the truth I just can't stand to see a vehicle that isn't maintained. I'd like to use a diesel engine oil year round in their cars, but a 15w40 would be too 'heavy' in the cold winter months. A 10w30 diesel engine oil would suit this situation fine, if I could find a good one. As I said earlier, I've only managed to find one so far. Any other 10w30 HDEO's I should be aware of?

Esso XD-3 Extra 10W30. Also available under the "President's Choice" brand name.

Of course....if they aren't too keen on oil changes, maybe the 0W30 Full Synthetic XD-3 0W30 (for $4/L) would be a better idea. Especially in Canadian winters.

PC 10w30 is an HDEO? Maybe it's just a western Canada thing. Although I've never actually even looked at a quart of PC oil so I wouldn't know.

A Motorcraft 10W30 HDEO with a CI-4 rating is available at some Ford dealers around here, so I'll guess it's available most other places too.

I went and checked today. The PC 10w30 in the local Superstore is just a plain PCMO. No mention on the back of the bottle of diesel engine ratings at all. It must be a regional thing. While I'm here, I went again to look at the Motomaster 10w30 HDEO and noticed it's actually CH-4/SH rated. How out of date are those ratings? Would they be safe to use in an engine made prior to 1996 for example?

55,

There is no "regional thing" going on. Although he is well intentioned, Pitzel was incorrect when he said that,
quote:

The 10W30 grade of Esso XD-3 EXTRA (10W30 Presidents Choice) meets the CI-4 standard.

President's Choice 15w40 is the only XD-3 variant sold under the President's Choice name. President's Choice 10w30 is Esso Protec Extra, not XD-3. If you want XD-3 10w30 you'll have to buy it at an Esso bulk dealer.

I got my father to switch his mint '76 Chevelle with a 350 over to 10W30 XD-3. He was previously using GTX, or Pennzoil Conventional. The car doesn't consume oil, but it seems to do well with this XD-3, and it's cheaper than the other oils on top of that.

I have read several people posting here that PC 15W40 is just rebottled XD-3. Does anyone know this with absolute certainty? Just because Esso supplies the oil does not mean it is exaclty the same formula as XD-3. Perhaps they use a lesser additive package in the PC oil to save money. Shell supplies Canadian Tire oil, yet it is not the same as Shell's oils. I am not trying to challange anyone, I am just trying to get the facts straight.

Oldawagon,

I personally spoke to an Esso rep. at Edmonton's Strathcona plant, who confirmed the P.C. 15w40 is XD-3. It is bottled on the same line and in the same containers as Esso XD-3, the only differences are the lable and cap.

Some parts of NB get to -40 in winter...

That's why Esso also makes and sells the excellent and inexpensive 0W-30. I don't think anyone here was advocating the use of 15w40 during a Canadian winter.

sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I noticed Irving makes their IDO diesel engine oil in 10w30. It's rated CH-4/SL. Think this would be any good?
