Any folks here frequent the junkyards still?

Hello again and like the title says; do any of you folks use the junkyards in your area? I am helping a friend probably tomorrow put a trans into a older civic, he got it from a well known junkyard that has most of their stuff inside. Just wondering how many of you folks do this, and anyone have a pull a part or pick a part yard near them? None here in my area of PA.

Oh yeah. I'm in the pull-your-own junkyards at least a few times a months! One of the great things about driving an older, extremely common vehicle!

I haven't used one since I got rid of my Dodge Grand Caravan, they were plentiful in pretty much every junkyard. Which was a good thing, considering how unreliable the thing was.

I used to go to the junkyards all the time, but not so much anymore. I guess that's because I'm not driving vehicles that need to be fixed all the time anymore.

There's only one You-pull-it yard near me. There used to be a lot more, but I think liability issues have really cut down on places allowing people to pull their own parts. These days most places dismantle the vehicles and stock the parts in a warehouse, then you just buy them over the counter.

You can get some upgrades! I got factory premium audio for my Taurus from a junyard, upgraded sway bars for it and some nicer outside trim panels.

On the Focus, I managed to find a rear sway bar from a 2003!

I was at one just yesterday for the HVAC control panel for a'98 Cherokee....actually got the panel, compressor, line set and LR taillight assembly for $125 (the control panel itself is several hundred $ typically).

I worked with the un-installer and we picked a Cherokee that had, what seemed like, a full charge.....refrigerant pressure level closely matched ambient. I was impressed that they sucked the charge out prior to disassemble. $20 "tip" to the disassembler insured me pieces were removed with care.

Yes, I actually enjoy visiting the pick-n-pull yards when the weather is nice. The ones around me generally dont have anything newer than 10 year old cars, but that still covers some of my fleet. I've pulled a few 5-speeds by myself, but now I'm getting older and wiser.

There are other yards in the area that have newer cars, but they pull the engines, trans, wheels etc before it goes out.

When I had my Saturns I was going all the time.
I liked to go just for fun, and to score neat and rare parts. Sometimes I was actually getting stuff to perform repairs though.
LOVE finding that holy grail exact part you need in great shape.. I wish I still had an older car I could tinker with and do these things..

I have a couple of pull-apart yards not to far away. Picked up all the accessories from my truck from there. Cruise, overhead console with computer, all that "neat" stuff the dealer charges a fortune for.

When I'm down visiting my folks I sometimes hit up Patterson Auto Salvage in Cochranton.

Pull the stuff yourself cheap. Trans complet 50$
Engine 100, other 5 -10$ etc

Of course around here most stuff coming in is pretty beat, he does not buy colission insurance write offs, just old 3rd hand stuff.

Good business to be in.

Per civics, not much stuff pre-2000, that stuff cycled thru 5 years ago, see newer units coming thru all the time.

The last junkyard I was in was early last year. It was a heavy truck yard and I was looking for an s-cam to do a slack adjuster mod on my engine stand. After pulling the old rusted parts out of the mud and then dealing with the wretched old women who ran the place about how they were “new” I said screw it and bought them(actually new) at a heavy truck supply for less than the scrap yard.

Considering the hassle, some of the people and rattle snakes. I just will not mess them(u pull its) any more.

They're at least a half hour away from me, and it's hit-or-miss with the finding the right parts, especially nowadays with little cross-over among the models. I'll used Craigslist or eBay for my used part needs.

Even if I don't need anything, I find time to go to the JY every couple months or so.

Having an older car they've come in handy several times, like if I had a broken piece of trim or interior piece, and if not, there's always a few things I like to "keep in stock" just in case. Even if I never need them I can always sell them later or give them away.

Yes. For TIRES! I have a secret spot that isn't picked over. I get most other parts I need online. Sometimes if I'm too lazy to do a press in FWD wheel bearing I get a whole hub/knuckle/spindle for $25 already pulled.

I sold a yard an old truck at scrap metal value then same truck popped up on CL six weeks later. Am ambivalent about their lack of scruples, that truck deserved a flattened trip to china. But they apparantly give a cash discount when I'm buying, so I hope they stay in business.
