The remedy for intake valve deposits, according to the Caltex paper, was more frequent oil changes. Intake valve deposit rate increased as oil age increases.
Mid/high SAP oils are fine for GDI as long as you're not hung up on 10k or OLM intervals, reusing filters multiple times, or avoiding top offs.
Regardless, a can of IVD spray/foam/drip fed cleaner is all I need regardless of the SAP level and what I recommend for all GDI-only engines. Interval is for you to decide but am stuck on twice a year before the normal oil change intervals.
I would not avoid 0w30 on the clearance rack. Scored a bunch from Redline, Lucas, Castrol over the years. 0w30 isn't something I need. Anywhere a 0w30 can be used, if no one is looking, a synthetic equivalent 5w30 can be used too.
Belgian Castrol in 0w30 and 0w40 hasn't wronged me yet.
With 0w30, one needs to know what spec your engine is calling for.... high or low HTHS....., and even then I'll up the HTHS and SAPs when I can.
