Another oil usage

Seems like the obvious thing to try first is a new PCV valve. Oil consumption through a PCV can be huge. Nothing in the engine is going to change suddenly, unless its something extreme like a broken ring. But a PCV valve can reach the sticky threshold overnight.

Is she the one physically dumping in Pennzoil? If not throw something else in there.
No she buys the oil and I change it. My brother changed the oil in her Dodge 300 and according to her never ran right afterwards. 2.7 started leaking badly and he resealed it only to not reset throttle body relearn and burned up transmission. She traded it in for Impala which I have been main one working on it.

PCV system in these isn't the greatest. There are mods you can do that are simple. I did this on the LLT in my now ex's 2010 [crappile] Traverse. It didn't have major consumption issues, but oil would pool in the intake hose between the breather & throttle body. We did use M1 Dexos 5w30 & changed the oil by the dash OLM. Usually changed it between 30% & 20% life left which was always around 7500mi.

In this case I'd suggest a high mileage oil and even consider bumping up a grade. Is it worth the conversation to say hey let's try a different brand, explain the benefits if it works...

just my $0.02

" My brother changed the oil in her Dodge 300 and according to her never ran right afterwards." Well, at least she's family.
Imagine a neighbor or customer saying that.

If you're that into it employ some subterfuge and get some other oil in there....again, she's family so lies are OK.

She won't switch since that is all my dad used. Pennzoil or nothing.

Hoo boy...fun situation there.

Have her buy the next higher grade. (And include her on the brand loyalty thread 🙄)

Of course if she's reasonable, show her this thread and she might consider another brand. While I understand the sentimentality of using the same oil Dad did, the evidence points towards a consistent oil-related issue across different vehicle manufacturers.

Yeah I'd just take what she buys and throw something else in there.

I talked her into at least PCV from dealer after New Year. Oil level is dropping and has turned dark which this car was always lightly colored after 5k but now at 2k it is very dark. I will work on getting her to go Valvoline Maxlife synthetic on next change. She has agreed at least to let me use Rotella Gas Truck 5w30 for top off that I got for a little over a 1.00 a qt. Gaining

Sounds like progress. Good job.

Here's a long-shot. Show her online that Pennzoil is now made from natural gas. Tell her it breaks down and turns back into gas so she needs to use a real oil made from real oil.
I know; LOL, Lying to mom will guarantee you go to to double hockey sticks.
