Friend's '09 Fit shifted quite sloppily and abruptly as well. However, after a software update for the PGM-FI system, the shifting turned super smooth several days after the update.

Nonsense, since the transmission should have been covered under the 5/60 powertrain warranty. It's possible that the car may be slightly out-of-warranty, but it should be close enough that goodwill coverage should have been extended automatically.
