Another good brand gone Chinese.

Nothing political about these posts concerning tariffs either, they are about economics and national security.

Since when was it against the rules to have the element of economics in our posts here?

I agree tariffs are necessary to keep manufacturing jobs in the USA, and to keep China from being an even bigger economic threat if that is even possible.

The problem I see is not that it is "cheap" as in affordable, the problem is the quality is too "cheap".

There are too many junks that fails way before it should due to the quality. Instead of just slapping a tariff from another country, I'd say we should do what the Europe did, mandate a 2 year (or even 5 year) warranty on non wear items so the low quality junks from local and abroad are screened.

Kodak left the digital camera market in Europe due to this, and I totally agree that they should be pulled out of even the US market due to their low reliability.

I have been into Harleys for many years now. Great American made motorcycle right? Not anymore. A few years ago they started using cheap Chinese wheel bearings. My old harley would go 100k miles with zero service done to the bearings. The new bikes are having failures at 5k. That's right 5k miles. Makes me sick to see companies make such poor decisions. I am waiting to see how long it takes for the recalls. I have decided that the Chinese do not know the first thing about making a bearing of any kind.

I guess overpriced Union labor or actual consumer demand for cheaper prices would have anything to do with it?

I recently ordered a cast iron part for one of the Caterpillar engines at work. Ordered the part from Cat. It shows up, it has the Cat part number and CHINA cast right in the middle of the outer surface. I was so [censored] mad I almost sent it back, but I needed to repair a coolant leak.

Call CAT corporate and COMPLAIN!

They need to hear from unhappy customers, and it doesn't hurt if you mention that a company like CAT that likes to market itself as a US company is turning its back on US workers so they can pay the CEO a few more bucks for his golden parachute.

If enough folks complained loudly enough and stopped buying when it says China, the companies will bring jobs home.

That's easy to beat. The first batch of parts is from "Asia Automotive, Limited". When those start failing, the boxes are changed to "Finest Bearing Company, Limited". When THOSE start failing, they are now "Quality Bearing Company, Limited". Same part, different name...rule is worthless.

And they are all in white boxes so they can just slap the new sticker on them, or even throw them in a new box.

If you are lucky enough to have Japanese bearings, adjust them and pack them with the finest grease you have so they may last as long as possible...

I think they are also intentionally trying to drain US consumers with their extreme short life parts and tools that you have to keep replacing and buying again. On top of that a lot of time and money is exhausted replacing broken/defective parts and tools. Heck, a lot of time and effort has to be spent to just avoid these subpar chinese parts.

I kind of wonder if the law should be changed that during the warranty period that these chinese imports should be liable for incidental and collateral damage. If a part breaks, the purchaser or installer shouldn't be on the hook for labor expense. As it stands they scarcely warrant the product alone.

If you hold the reseller liable for it, then they'll be careful not to sell you junk. Or you can mandate any importer to purchase insurance so if they go out of business, you can file claims to the insurance companies and they'll force the smaller guys who hit and run out of businesses.

Making the importer or builder insure it makes sense to me. I would support that action.
