a relative has ATT DSL service. About 37 days ago it stopped working. many calls to India, California, Michigan. Test, OK, users problem, ATT OK, MUST BE USER. Replace phone line(pots)1500' away because open, got dial tone on, noise off, still no i-net. Replace user phone line, buy new walmart voice phone, buy new ethernet cables, buy new netgear modem/router, etc. PROBLEM WAS: ATT had changed password that goes on router / modem and didn't know it. (we had verified old password w/ ATT several times. ) friend said ATT probably changed and forgot password - did that and now everything is good, at least for the moment. 4k e-mails to read! FWIW

That's the problem with PPPoE service. I am a former Verizon DSL tech support rep, and this, to say the least, is absolutely horrible. The first thing after testing the line is to access modem and/or router firmware and make sure it's connecting. Or, you can make a remote dialer through windows or the mac to check password issues. Absolutely ridiculous.

Lol I talk to a lot of customers in North and South Carolina, and you wouldn't believe some of the complaints and problems people have with AT&T down there, IT's frankly astounding some of the things I've heard, including techs deliberately cutting lines to customers house for no reason, as well as internet that works about 10% of the time and ATT says all is well.

Fairpoint, Frontier, and Verizon I hear far fewer complaints about than AT&T.

AT&T sucks. I have them for my cell phone. I get service practically nowhere.

I guess the deal is they laid off a bunch of their techs but kept upper management. A guy I work with has a tower of theirs just off his property. When that snow storm hit last October the tower had some issues. They sent out a manager guy who basically just stood there and stared at it and had no clue what to do.

LOL Sprint has a guy with a landscape trailer and a bunch of gas cans and $400 chonda generators. He scampers around to the tower sites fueling these gennies and it's a losing battle for him.

Verizon wireless, by comparison, has a "bunker" with rows of batteries for its UPS and a monster generator as well. Assume generator runs on natural gas or at least a monster fuel tank, I haven't seen them worry about it. VZW in my rural area seems somewhat serious about coverage as well.

I have them as well. Next time you/they call, ask to be transferred to the 'customer retention dept.' as they have more options/pull than others. When connected, ask them for their toll free number. Use that number from now on. When talking to tech, you can ask to be elevated to 'tier 2' service, which is usually USA.

Before it gets as bad as you experienced, call your states Public Utility Commission and file a complaint. I suddenly had several phone calls from ATT the next day as they have to answer to the PUC.
