Another (and hopefully unexplored) 5w20 question.

It wasn't on the 502 my buddy installed in a customer's Chevelle. It came with a black OEM filter. Nothing special about it that I could tell

I saw a couple on a road trip this past spring break, and I was like [Eek!] [Dummy!] lol. I know that V10 has gobs of low end torque, almost as much as the Powerstroke IIRC. But, still, those motorhomes are big and heavy, and to constantly lug one of those around with a gas engine just doesn't make sence to me. I can't imagine the sh*tty gas mileage that thing gets...

I work for Monaco. Guess which units don't sell well? The cheaper gas engine ones with Ford V-10s.

I have a 2004 Motorhome on an E450 chassis and it has the V10. The main reason for not having Powerstroke, is the weight that the powestroke adds to the unit. A lot of motorhomes are close to the max gross vehicle weight when they sell. This does not leave a lot of CCC for the person to add things.

That's one reason I am moving to a Class A motorhome. The one I am buying weighs 13000 lbs and has a GVWR of 17000 lbs.

Also has a 460 gasoline V8. Strange thing though is that this one (a '97) specifies an SJ/CF4 oil whereas the older '90 Class C specified a PCMO.

I can't imagine they'd specify 5w20 in a Class A with the V10. I don't even think it weighs into their CAFE calculations, does it? Nor should the Class C since it is sold as an imcomplete vehicle.

The V10s seem popular for people who don't like diesel, most in the US don't, for low emmissions situations, and needs for lowest engine weight. The trade off is durability. In a situation where engine life is a factor due to hard use there are some obvious choices besides a 5w20 PCMO. If you want to stay light look into a 0W30 synthetic HDEO like XD3, or at least a 5w30 PCMO synthethic with maybe an A5/B5 rating. Using such oils will probably void warranty though, which is ironic as I've run across some sites where people were hoping to get 100k miles out of their V10s in their RVs and such, so switching at 100k might be pointless.

I'm sure up at Windsor when they make a motor and fill it with oil and put on a oil filler cap labelled 5w20 they don't know where it's going to end up.

That might be true if you let outdated knowledge interfere with current technology. I've seen test data where 5w20 PCMOs produced less wear than 15w40 HDEOs in severe engine tests.
