After over 30 years in the fast paced Hi-Tech Microelectronics world -- I'm done working the 40 hour week and am Retiring!!

Defense Electronics & Medical Device Engineering. What a ride.

It's nice I'm in demand, so I could do consulting & short-term stuff, but that's it.

Not 1 day or 1 dollar of Unemployment or Welfare my entire life and I am leaving on my own terms.

Home is paid-off EARLY & no loan payments to anyone.

Income?? Dividends, until I draw off Retirement funds, then both.

Lots of projects & finally some trips where I can FINALLY slow-down & enjoy the USA, Canada & wherever else.

You did well, not many plan that far ahead, congrats on you new semi retirement........................

must be the season, as with my company being sold, retirees are everywhere.

I retired early.
Except for the paycheck, alot of jobs are over-rated.

No more office politics and back stabbing (others, not me).
When the boss patted me on the back, he was looking for a soft spot to stick the knife.
(that's a joke, my boss was decent).

It gives you the opportunity to relax.

It also lets you find out the kind of person you really are,
or want to be.
Possible learn new hobbies, or do volunteer work.

When I do a project around the house, I now say:
- A Contractor would have seen how 'fast' he could get it done.
- I see how 'well' I can get it done.

Congratulations! Enjoy your new found time to do what you please.

I look forward to this point in my life someday.

My father recently retired and I am very happy to see how happy it has made him and how much he enjoys messing around with old tractors, snowmobiles, cars, gardening and much more.
 
I'm slowly coming to the realization that I wouldn't mind early retirement. Years ago, as a kid, I couldn't fathom the notion of not working. Leaving aside the "how to pay for it" I couldn't see how I'd manage with so much idle time. After buying a house and having some older cars I'm starting to realize just how much time I could use up, if I did my own work... or even just some of it. Throw in the travel and camping that I'd like to get back to, and spending my time doing other pursuits (helping friends, family, church) and it's pretty clear that that I wouldn't mind it.
 
Congrats - eat healthy and live long. A baby aspirin a day won't usually hurt either. Only 10 more years and you can start getting some of your Social Security money back.

Congrats Turk indeed, that is great, and at what I consider to be a young age for retirement!

Drew, you and I both need new jobs, because not every place is bad

Congratulations on the retirement!

Don't know if you've ever explored the Gulf South...but it's a lazy sort of place you can get seriously lost in. Depending on the areas there are certain parts its like stepping back in time... without all the bigotry.

No where near retirement, haven't even started my career yet, but the wife and I make it a point to leave the state at least once a month... or at least spend the day exploring our own. Its astonishing what you come across.

Costs less than 100$...and give you a great appreciation for your area.

Wyoming, Idaho, utah, and Washington state are other areas that a breathtaking.

Congratulations again...now enjoy it!


(If you do road trips and see how cheap you can do them for, they truly become adventures. Tourists traps are out of the question off the bat.)
 
Way to go!!! I am jealous but applaud your planning! I still have a long to go but I am hoping to not be stuck working until they bag and tag me!
 
Congratulations.

I've always been self employed and can't really imagine ever being retired. New businesses to open, new properties to acquire, can't see much point in retiring.

What would you do all day?

Actually have a lot planned:

- Extreme organizing & throwing out of stuff.
- Selling coins & other valuables on Cl & ebay
- Buying some cars cheap, fix-em-up & sell for more
- Tons of home projects
- Buying & selling stocks by watching them A LOT more

Trips:

- Yep, I love north shore of Lake Superior
- ROAD TRIPS!! LOVE to drive all day! Colorado & LOTS of other States


- More time with Family & Friends
- More Volunteering

On & on.
