Very sorry that this happened ... makes me very sad. Praying for their families, friends, and fellow police officers.

It probably doesn't deter criminals, but they don't offend again after they're dead.
Jails aren't unescapable - Earl Van Denton and Paul Ruiz broke out of an Oklahoma slammer (McAlester - not a pretty place) and went on a killing spree, including a cop.
