Deputy Sheriff Mark Burbridge was shot and killed at the Pottawattamie County Jail, in Council Bluffs, as he and another deputy returned two inmates to the jail after a court appearance.

Someone forgot to put these guys in handcuffs and ankle chains,,,imho

As the deputies began to take the inmates into the jail one of the inmates attacked them. The inmate was able to disarm one of the deputies and shot them both. He then stole the transport van and fled from the jail. He shot a citizen nearby when he attempted to carjack the man. He then abducted another citizen and forced her to drive him from the scene in her vehicle.

The subject was located by Omaha, Nebraska, police officers after releasing the woman. He was taken into custody following a high speed pursuit and charged with numerous felonies related to the carjacking and weapons possession. The man had just been sentenced to 55 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder.

Deputy Burbridge had served with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office for 12 years.

Very sad. Illustrates the type of criminals that law enforcement deals with every day. One mistake or delay in decision can result in death. This will probably not make national news. If the perp had been killed it would have made national headlines as another police killing.

---- plus one on that.

Unfortunately cops always have to be on guard and take precautions with prisoners.

This same thing happened in Tampa about 15 years ago and 2 cops were killed.

That's completely wrong. The prisoner was indeed in handcuffs and ankle chains-it's mandatory when transporting prisoners anywhere in Iowa. The prisoner managed to hide a shank and then, after court proceeding where he was sentence to 45 years for manslaughter, attacked Mark with the shank while being transferred from the prisoner transport van back into the county jail. After disabling Mark, the prisoner grabbed Mark's weapon and shot both Mark and Pat Morgan. After the deputies were incapacitated, the prisoner was able to remove his handcuffs, take the prisoner transport van, ram it through the closed garage door, and escape.

It gives you an idea of how dangerous, desperate and cunning prisoners can be.

When the prisoner was caught he was still wearing his ankle shackles.

My wife and I will be attending the public visitation tomorrow and the funeral on Monday.

Very sad. Sentenced for 55 years for pleading guilty to murder....... Sorry, but I think the death penalty should be Federal, that would greatly reduce problems like this.

How so? The prisoner was being transported for related court appearances which is a requirement to in any civilized country death penalty or not.

Rest In Peace.

Every time I leave for work I make SURE I give the kids & wife a hug & kiss.

You just never know, no matter what line of work you're in...

They took no chances this time:

PS: I fully support the death penalty for crimes like this where the perpetrator has premeditatedly declared war on civilized society. The problem is the long drawn out appeals etc...In cases like this where there is NO DOUBT of guilt...he should be dead already. It would help bring closure to the VICTIM'S family.

I bet if you did the sums it'd work out cheaper in the end. I dunno about where you live, but here incarceration is expensive. 55 years would pay for a *lot* of failed appeals.

Tragic loss, prayers for the families.

What the grits, they captured the guy? he did not resist?

In Virginia, we used a "lock box", which had a separate padlock and was an enclosure around the handcuffs to prevent inmates from picking the locks on the cuffs. I don't see this used anywhere else. I did inmate transport while a deputy in Chesterfield County, VA. Some of these people are really bad. I used to sit and think sometimes what could make a person go so bad.

Sorry to hear this. It seems to me that violent offenders (suspected or convicted of assault, rape, murder, drug dealing etc.) should always be transported in leg irons and handcuffs attached to a belly belt. It's the times when you get too lax or let your guard down that these attacks most often occur.

Sad but preventable.

As to the incident where the officer was killed, a very lax set of policy's allowed it to occur. When I was on inmate transport, the guns/weapons AND vehicle ignition key had to be locked up in a lock box before any inmates were removed from the van. Had they had that policy at most they would have had a few injured officers before backup arrived and subdued the convict.

A very unfortunate, and avoidable situation indeed.

This occurred earlier in the week, Tuesday I think. Prisoner is being taken back to Iowa but not to Pottawattamie County(Council Bluffs,Iowa). Iowa authorities are concerned about prisoners safety so will be held somewhere outside Council Bluffs. Funeral for Burbridge is Monday and Omaha news is reporting law enforcement members from fifty states will be at the service. We thank the deputy for putting the uniform on. Douglas County(Omaha) sheriff's officers on each side and in back of prisoner had a hold of him

at hearing this week. Worthless piece of human flotsam. Iowa doesn't have the death penalty so taxpayers will be on the hook for years supporting the piece of garbage.
