An actual Dex II fluid for dex II apps

Hello,

I am well aware that the follow-on dex fluids are backwards compatible, and thus very acceptable for use in older applications, but there is a school of thought in the MB world that the older mechanical ATs that are specced for, say Dex II or IID may do better on a dex II spec fluid than a Dex III or VI. I am not sure if I attest to this or not, but am looking for thoughts.

My thought is that the Dex II fluid had a different viscosity and frictional characteristic than dex III, Dex VI, etc. Sure, some of that was built in for shear, but at the same time, there are differences. Now, for a modern AT, say one that was from the late 1990s, Im sure than Dex VI will do perfectly in place for Dex III, and I do use it. But modern electronic transmissions are smart enough to account for all sorts of parameters.

Older mechanical ATs are not that smart. Therefore, they are designed to a point based upon the spec fluid that is supposed to be used in there. In applications where the AT might be smart enough to adapt, it is no issue, and in applications where getting 20k, 50k, 100k before a rebuild is due is one thing... But I'm talking MB diesels, where after 150k, another 200-300k of trouble free miles is expected.

redline sells a Dex II fluid, which IMO is sold for that very reason. They say it themselves that the D4, etc. are far more widely usable fluids, but there certainly is a reason to sell it.

MB has spec sheet numbers for various ATFs, with the exception of 236.3, which is an undyed type A ATF for PS service, they follow somewhat along the dexron procession. They make a difference between applications with electronically controlled lockup clutches, and mechanical ATs. Some of the fluids are back-specifyable, others are not.

Still, it may be the same point of Dex II vs III, or III vs VI, etc., they are more than good enough for reasonable service going forward, in most vehicles.

But again, the fluids are designed for ever smarter and more complex ATs, but if they do not have the same friction and viscosity characteristics, they may NOT be ideal for a mechanical-controlled and operated AT.

Something like redline Dex II may be ideal, as it will be shear-stable, oxidation-stable, etc., yet maintain the characteristics of dex II that the AT was designed to.

Any thoughts???
 
Newer fluids are usually better than ideal.

Poor performance isn't a characteristic that I'm looking for, or willing to settle for.

The only issue with the newest ATF's is that they are expensive, some have additives that might be incompatible with certain gaskets or seals, and when we're looking for an excuse the fluids are easy to blame.
 
I dont mind cost - Im thinking of running redline dex II. I dont see that there will be poor performance in many of the key areas (say, viscosity retention) using RL vs a circa 1980s dex II.

Now, the RL may not be compatible with 30yo gaskets and seals... but that is another issue.

I just want to have the right characteristics for the old AT to run perfectly for as long as possible. 500k is easy in the MB diesel world, but ALL ATs are still unreliable, IMO.
 
I have never had an issue with anything European that called for DexII just useing DexIII. I can definately see where DexVI might be too different from early DexII to be an ideal replacment. DexVI is like water compared to DexII. I would either use DII from Redline or stick with the heavier Dex III formula's like Valvoline Maxlife ATF. Valvoline MaxLife is in my opinion one of the best fluids on the market that is widely available for older DexII applications. It has good oxidation resistance, is seal friendly POE is not always seal friendly on older dried out damaged seals made from cheap materials. My concern with redline unless the trans has been rebuilt in recent times would be seal compatability.

I had a shop teacher that used a synthetic in an old 4 speed Muncie or Saginaw can not recall. The transmission was low miles but all OEM from the 1960's and the synthetic gear lube leaked out of it like crazy. I think it was running out past the seals in something like 500 miles after he put it in. It was a seal compatability issue.

dex II or III will shear down to dex VI levels anyway. Good point on the seal compatability. Dex VI has synthetic to at least some level anyway...

Still a tough thing.
 
There is no reason to use Dex II in anything. Dex III G or H is a better fluid. Mercon V is better than all of them, and I use in it all my Auto transmission cars including the BMW with the ZF 4HP22 transmission

I think Red Line would work fine, could always contact them and see what they say.

Good thoughts there. Do you have any prior used oil analysis? You see where I'm going here. Take a sample of what you are using now (what is that BTW) & try the RL DII along with UOA. As someone is fond of saying (paraphrase), let science guide you via used oil analysis.

Of course, you don't want to damage something in the learning process, which I fully understand. Does Redline offer any type of meaningful warranty for this particular application? I would assume not since pre-existing conditions are there. However, what does Dave explicity say about the seal compatibility issue or other possible issues?
 
Fuchs Titan 5000 Dexron II ATF is fully synthetic and heavy duty and costs 18 pounds a liter in England

Fuchs Titn 6000 Dexron VI ATF is synthetic (they don't mention the word fully in any data sheet) and also non heavy duty, and it costs 15.55 pounds a liter in the same shop.

That makes me think a lot about it.

In fact, if I remember correctly, there is another brand whose Dexron III is advertised as fully synthetic and Dexron VI as partly synthetic. Maybe Mobil?

Forget Dexron-VI. It is only for GM Hydramatic transmissions and a few others that have been certified for this fluid.

There are a very small number of transmissions that were originally spec'ed for Dexron-II or IIE than are not happy with Dexron-III. Older Honda transmissions are in this group. I don't know about MB.

So...What does the MB parts guy sell for your transmission? Buy a bottle and research the specs.
