Amsoil XL reformulated......better?

I was checking the Amsoil site and saw that they reformulated the XL version. It says it has better TBN. However it shows only a 9 for the TBN.

Anyone know what the reformulation consisted of?

I think mainly to meet API SN GF-5 and it went from a 7.5K oil to a 10K oil.

I know the GF-5 has many performance improvements over the GF-4. I just wonder how they did it.

Better base oils...better additives? Both?

What additives were increased or added.

Nice improvement! It's a great oil IMHO. Most likely additive package, since I don't see why they would change the quality base stocks already in use.

I think Mobil 5000 has a 9 tbn in their 5-30 flavor. Funny how these numbers show up.

And IMO to comply with dexos1. 10K is the new gold standard.

It doesn't have to comply to dexos 1, it is a "recommended for" application in this instance.

XL line is probably no better than your average GF-5/dexos 1 rated oil IMO.

I called AMSOIL a couple of weeks ago about the OP's same question. I talked to a rep who had the personality of a corpse, just gave one word answers but it added up to him saying AMSOIL boosted their additive package. I was not sure if this guy had been called a thousand times with people like me asking him the same questions. I just noticed that the batch #'s on the bottles of the 'new XL' vs. the 'old XL'(which was bought 6 months ago) were close and they smelled exactly the same. Not that that is in any way scientific. I still am a little skeptical. I like XL and I will continue to use it for 6.5k intervals until it is gone. M1 PP, PU, Quaker State Ultimate Durability and many others can do the same thing.
BTW: After I read that Mobil did not have to make any changes to meet DEXOS, I had reservations too.

A lot of fluff marketing in there. "Extended drain boost"? You can't go wrong with the XL oils, but I think any dexos1 oil will be just as good. Amsoil is just marketing their product for extended drains. All they did was upgrade their oils to GF-5/SN/dexos1 like all the others.

You pretty much keep repeating yourself.

The old XL oil would have no problem with "GF-5/SN/dexos1". You make some strange assumptions - including the actual reason for upgrade. Is it really that hard to believe Amsoil actually enhanced the base oil blend and formulated a new additive package to last a bit longer?

With the new OE oil line being very similar to the old XL oils, but very much lower cost, Amsoil needed an oil that is above and beyond the old XL line - but at the same price. I'm pretty surprised none of the price chopper BITOGers are catching on to this?

Where are all the Pennzoil Ultra / Pennzoil Platinum / Mobil 1 price nuts?
