Amsoil, what group?

I have watched the DVD about Al and I am quite sure that he has passed on his morals, convictions, and loyalties to his boy's.
These traits make him # one with me.

It surprised me so many take shots at Amsoil. I can understand taking shots at the dealers, but not the company.

Only thing I can think of is that Amsoil really isn't the maker of the "First Synthetic Oil".

I'd put Amsoil ahead of Redline at this point. Just bc RL uses an POE base doesn't make them #1 IMO.

Yeah...those cheap, pesty POEs. I wonder why RedLine keeps using them.

Look at the Group I, how well did that do? How about combining PAO with POE?

Tell Elf to get rid of that PAO they use in their F1 cars.

The attraction of the oil to the metal is no longer needed at high speed, when hydrodynamic
lubrication is protecting the metal (the equivalent of “aquaplaning” in your engine). On the contrary, the
attraction of the Ester molecule to the metal will slow that “hydrodynamic” phenomenon and may cost
horsepower. At high speed, the resistance to high temperature and to foaming that PAO provides is more
important than the low-speed lubricity provided by some esters.

I've heard mixed things about majority ester based oils. I think they are excellent for many applications but I'm also interested in how the big guys formulate and why some chose other base oils.

One small fact: Our Formula 1 cars use a PAO based oil. These V10 engines (V8 in 2007) go from 0 to 21,000 RPM in very stressed conditions. ELF has won both the constructors and pilots championship the last two years (2005 & 2006). Our Formula 1 racing technology goes back over 30+ years back to the Jackie Stewart days.

I have nothing but respect for Amsoil...top notch company.

Buster, if your going to quote someone, please use the whole paragraph. These "?" means they are questions, not statements.

LCM's quote:I feel the only way anything will ever change is WHEN the founder passes away and the next generation comes online. What will happen? I don't know, but have heard the Son and Son in law are top notch folks....only time will tell...Did Al teach them well? Is Corporate profit going to be the bottom line? Is greed going to set in? I don't know, but human nature is a strange thing.

Does the ASL or TSO thicken in extended ocis? I know that the synthetic oil life study is fairly old, but one problem in that particular extended drain was that the 5W30 thickened to a 50W at 210F after 13K or so. I am not sure if that test was run with the XL or the ASL.

Some of the old formulations did, especially if the car had emissions issues. The interesting thing, this thickening never seems to effect wear rates. Anyway, the new formulations simply don't show this thickening.

Well, as far as I concerned first real full synthetic oil (no crude oil used) was developed by Germans during World War 2 , yet Amsoil don’t seem to be very shy to claim that they did it first.. I wouldn’t trust on anything else they say.

Hatco was maker of the First API Synthetic oil. Amsoil is a great oil.

You don't trust one of the best performers in motor oil for the last 30 years? Name one motor that died using one of AMSOIL's extended drain oils. This company has encouraged extended drains for how long? Long enough for EOM to start and develop an extended drain oil themselves. Mobil 1 Extended Performance ring a bell. Find me an bad UOA that Amsoil was used and the motor was in sound mechanical condition. This is coming from someone who is not an Amsoil fan. I have never used it. This is a good chance I never will. But to say that I don't trust them because of a marketing slogan. That is just an terrible point.

Please, Den, you're kidding, right? Just bustin Pablo's stones here, right? It doesn't say "The first synthetic", it says "The first IN synthetics". Which of course, would imply First Place, The Best, First in Class. We might not like the marketing/purchasing model, but they're product quality is clearly up there enough to make the claim. To take the bottle slogan in any other context is rather disingenuous at best. At least make the stretch to be a little fair with this stuff.

I'm not a user yet and I don't sell it, but the Pabs, **** in Falls Church, and Don have certainly not been of questionable intent as some dealers have been portrayed here, and in fact are most helpful with questions about the makeup, use and pricing of the products they sell. Judging by the many replies to PMs I've personally posted to them over the couple of years I've been reading here, they probably pm back and forth far more than they post, and they aren't hard-sell types on any level. Further, Amsoil's corporate is VERY upfront about the product, which is more than we can say about others who plead "proprietary" to questions Amsoil routinely answers as a matter of standard business practice. XOM, for instance, which refuses to even indicate whether present-day product matches that of Pre-Katrina. Proprietary, baby! Again, we might not like what we have to go through to buy their stuff absent a close-by dealer, but they aren't frauds and shouldn't be "labeled" as such, pardon the pun.

Fair is fair.

Viscosity change indicates physical property of the oil has changed. UOA, as good as it is, captures partial information on oil, for example, it does not reveal how much mpg lost due to oil thickening.

Lance Henriksen was one of the later synthetics, and was a vast improvement on the earlier synthetics IIRC.

(BTW, he was a pretty good vampire and gunslinger)

And Hatco made this API in a vacuum? Sure Hatco actually made the synthetic base oil. That was a little beyond Al's capability. But Al drove them to do it by going into deep debt, working his butt off, and never giving up. Mobil comes along and sees it might work AFTER Al goes through with it and within a year or so had a product.
