Amsoil, what are your thoughts?

They are a small company that is increasing in market share and doing it with substantial consistent growth year over year and felt that doing it the MLM way was best.

They do appear in some big chain stores up here and I believe they would be in Walmarts and AAP's or AZ's across the country if they could keep up with the large volumes these MEGA-MARTS would want at a time but can't so they continue to grow in the background through word of mouth and using MLM jobbers.

Nothing wrong with it IMO and how that detracts from the quality product that they offer and allows people like you to justify calling it "Snake Oil" and "Non Reputable" is beyond me and only makes you look like the "(GM PEOPLE) who are idiots" which I never ever called you!

I think I am a "Lemming."

Just found out what that word meant. i thought it was something -completely- else! The question is, the level of thought required to be a Lemming.

Oh, I imagine NOW Amsoil would be DARN PLEASED to get out of MIL and move to retail. Kinda late for that now.

But then again, if not for MIL, some former military pilot wouldn't have the company he has today. I'm sure it STILL took a darn good bit of capital to get it off the ground.

They say Walmart offered them several -millions- and AMSOIL turned it down. Is this true?

Id have seriously considered it.

MMO also has military roots!

I like high quality products.Ones that can't be found in Wal Marts and Home Depots. I do most of my shopping on line to avoid mainstream follow the common crowd.I think Amsoil products make it simple to buy quality(even wiper blades) and BIG BROWN delivers to my door.I have Amsoil products in my lawnmowers,New Holland Tractor(including hydraulic oil),Diesel truck, gas truck etc.I buy clothes for the most part same way as well as many many other products.I'd buy grocery's on line if it was easy to do such.I could care about their marketing or how they pay employees or associates.

Kudos to Amsoil!!!

Wow, I didn't think I would get this kind of response. Thanks. To clear things up, I did a few years of oil analysis with Mobil 1 before I decided that it wasn't cost effective for the results I was seeing. When I switched to back to Chevron and Havoline conventional oil, my oil analysis results were very good and I have not tried a synthetic since.

My problem with trying Amsoil or any extended oil change oil, is that its hard for me to leave oil in for thousands and thousands of miles. I grew up during the 3 month, 3,000 mile oil changes and its hard for me to feel comfortable going longer even though I know most oils can go longer these days.

My friend was pushing the better fuel economy angle of Amsoil. Have you guys that use it, seen better fuel economy? Thanks again for all of the responses.

Wayne,

Barely... Not like 3-4mpg but maybe less than 0.2mpg at best and my engine has been quite the oil transient over the years.

I too am turned off by their sales practices. Like another poster, if they had a local store I might bite. Until then, I will avoid their Scamway practices. I have used their motor oil before and seemed ok.

When I calculate the costs they are about double that of PU. Plus shipping. They might be a little better, but not twice as good. It might work for you if you plan on running the oil forever, but I am not going to run my oil that long.

I figure with the rebates and all I have about 3 years worth of oil. I bought QS Syn and PP for a little over a $1/quart. Amsoil wants around $10/qt PLUS shipping, so to me not at all cost effective. Actually, pretty illogical.

I grew up in the 3 month 3000 mile Era as well, it was hard for me to extend drains beyond 6000 miles/1 year. Most off the shelf synthetics will do that easily. I did it with M1, and PP many times over the past 20 years in my E-150 w/o issue.

As far as additional mpgs from Amsoil, I ran it for a year in my Jeep and was unable to measure any difference at all.

I would think the deciding factor for Amsoil as to whether they were successful via brick and mortor retail would be the need to get their product rated by the API/ACEA as well as applicable OEM specifications. We all know RP is sold in some retail stores, but we don't know how successful they are.
