AMSOIL Thickening

Hi All,
I have a 2005 Honda Pilot and a 2006 Honda Accord 4 cyl. Both have about 27K on them. Ran conventional oil for the first 15K. PP for the next 12K. Used Honda filters. I just bought a couple cases of Amsoil 0w20 and EAO13 filters and am planning on extended drains. Both cars are driven about 16K to 18K a year. I live in Wisconsin and most driving is either highway or "country city" - long stretches of 40-45MPH roads with stops approx. 3 - 5 miles.

I saw some posts and reports of Amsoil thickening over time, with some 5w30s becoming 15w50s in 15K-20K miles. I am very concerned about this. My vehicles were designed for a 20 weight, not a 40 weight. Has Amsoil addressed this problem, especially with the 0w20?

Well the problem was mostly with the old TSO 0w30 formula I think. The new ASM 0w-20 will probably thicken a little bit at 15,000 miles but nothing you should be concerned about. I wouldn't run more than 10,000 miles on a daily driver without getting a used oil analysis first though. Good luck, it's a great oil.

The thickening issue with Amsoil was always one of thase thangs that really seemed to matter not. The numbers on the wearmetals look good, but the oil thickened a little.
So what. imo, not a concern.

A problem of long ago. Certainly not a problem with current formulas, especially ASM 0W-20. Just not a concern.

Indeed the old formula TSO 0w30 and ASL 5w30 used to thicken a bit, but as stated didn't necessarily cause an increase in wear metals. I don't think any became 15W-50 (viscosity over 16.3 cSt!), but certainly some oils that started in the 12 cSt range (high 30) moved into 14-15 cSt range (SAE 40)

Also I might add the issue seemed particularly characteristic in GM V8's with some blowby/emission and high copper issues.

I agree with Pablo. It was a problem a few years ago but recent used oil analysis have shown it to be in the past.

Along with what Pablo reported, the viscosities for the old TSO, ASL, and ATM started in the ~11.5 cSt area, and a 40 weight starts at 12.5 cSt. Just a little thickening would bump it up to a 40 weight. The thickening never affected wear, though some had MPG decreases, however others didn't.

Amsoil holds it's viscosity extremely well over long drains.
