I agree. Cleaning and not adding to deposits are a different thing. Another possibility is, just using a different oil. Of course, oils are different, formulated differently, one product could clean what the other leaves, just as a byproduct of a different chemistry. One not being "better" than the other, just skinning the cat in a different way.
I am not quite sold on the "synthetic" is better thing. Certain applications, synthetic lube is not suitable, such as perhaps in a hydraulic application. Some equipment specifically call for a conventional oil.
In my test that you mention, was in my daughters Tahoe, 5.3, bought used, well kept, and has been well kept for last 5 years or so, using Napa 5w30 mostly, 3000 of 6 month changes. The crud on the drain plug was not normal, so I can only extrapolate that the Amsoil SynBlend was the doer.
I have thought about using the synblend, but wish they made something in a 40 weight. I use my other stuff hard when I drive them and like the extra protection and a higher HTHS, fine for Tahoe, not ok for Big Block, IMO...might be wrong.
I would not hesitate to use anything from Amsoil, ever. Maybe not the gun oil, but everything else.
