BITOG,

Would SS be over kill on 5k OICs even when towing a ton? Thinking boosted Moly and Boron couldn't hurt and the Ester?

I suggest you get a UOA

I have a VOA with Lake Speed Jr. so we can track oxidation. Just wondering what others thought.

Don't think it's a waste. But I just did a UOA at 3k miles and everything looked great minus a small decrease in viscosity. I'd just find something you're most comfy with, run it a couple OCI and test it

A UOA isn’t going to give him any relevant data other than if the oil is still serviceable at 5k. It’s not the correct tool to discern “overkill” or even wear protection.

I assume we are talking about the L3B engine? On face value, that engine just plain kicks ass! The CT4 (optionally) uses that engine, and it seems like a real gem! I'm half way tempted to get one before it's too late.

An SP rated euro 40 off the wm shelf is sufficient. But why get a 2.7L to tow a lot with.
Because my trailer and cargo weight is around 5k. 2.7 is rated at 7700. Easy tow and not working engine hard at all.

My 2.7 is at 40k now hauls approx 950 or so pounds of tools and boxes in the bed as it's normal work load

At 3k it's usually down a 1/2 to 3/4 a quart of oil ...... I top it off and oil and PF66 filter at 5 k every time average 100hrs

Oh ok I was expecting a lot more than that. I've towed more with my old 2.5l ranger pedal to the floor. The 2.7t is fine for it. Use ss is you want but I'd be happy with an SP rated 40 grade euro.

imho, it would but just bc of cost. theres other cheaper oils that would work great that are cheaper.

Yes. the Amsoil SSO is high quality a long life formulation , paying for their long life formulation and not using it isn't worth the price when a lesser cost high quality oil would be a better choice. It is your $$$ do what makes you feel the best .

Only one way to know - send of a sample.

SS is a great oil for a GDI turbo engine. You will likely be able to extend it, safely, with that oil.

I agree. Get at least 2-3 UOAs to establish a trend, but running it long once isn't going to cause an issue and can see how far the SS will go.

I think a lot of towing might raise the question on ATF temp and questions on ATF service interval; more than the OCI at 5k with SS. 15k on SS with towing? Yeah there would be questions there on repeatability, but 7.5k and 10k with a test should reveal how the oil is doing without any real concern of "problem" in the short-term or long-term. Monitoring oil and ATF temps would also be good to get some data when towing vs when not. ATF UOA might be equally important in this regard.
