I wonder if anyone has tried Amsoil Sever Gear
lube 75W-90Wt in a manual transmission? I have used MolaKule lube great lube, used Amsoil MTG
grea lube. I wonder how Toyota 5 speed transmission would shift with the Sever gear.
This lube should get max protection to the gear
box. Toyota calls for GL-4 or GL-5. Thank You
guys as always.

Same deal here with my '04 RAV4, Big. A GL-4 or -5 is called out.

I've done the following, and have settled on the Severe Gear 75W-90 after trying both that and the MTG 75W-90:

-- Ran SVG for 5,000 miles, changed, and then ran another 5,000 miles. Very nice stuff, with a high film strength. The SVG didn't help the rough 1-2 shift, but that's just the way this transmission is built, apparently.

-- Ran the MTG 75W-90 for 2,400 miles, hoping to get rid of the 1-2 shift grunch, after an overnight drain of the SVG. Worked okay at first, but really wasn't all that different from the SVG. Then, in the last 400 or so miles, shifting began to get a little rougher, and I could hear more gear noise. Not good, in my book.

The MTG is significantly thinner than the SVG. Both pass the copper corrosion test with a 1B rating, so they're okay to use in virtually all manual transmissions for yellow metals.

This past weekend, went back to the SVG, at 12,400 miles. Minimal gear noise now, about the same engagement, but the transmission feels smoother. With the heavier oil, it's probably better protected against shocks, and with the GL-5 additive package, almost certainly against wear.

I'll stick with it, even though I called Toyota and they said a GL-4 is fine.

I have Amsoil gear lube in my 91 Toyota 5 speed. 150k and it shifts like it's brand new. It slides into gear like butter w/o the clutch. I don't think it was the Severe Gear.

stick with a dedicated transmission lube with a gl4 rating and 75/90wt. i've used the gl4/5 valvoline many years ago that was supposedly mt rated and it never shifted the same and became worse after a few weeks in my 85. i was able to find the proper oe replacement from the dealer but it never was the same and learned to deal with it. I later tried m1 75/90 and it was notchy feeling also but didnt harm the trans in my 95 tacoma swapped it back and it was fine. my other toys i never changed and just left till traded or junked without issue. i should have learned my lesson the first time. i would pass on the amsoil reg/svg or mtf after hearing several not so good reviews on the toy forums.
i now use the recommended fluid from Molakule and have been very happy, as others are on this board with his products and fair prices. his mtl-r or mtl-p would work fine and he is a sponsor and invaluable resource on this board. ask him and he will give you a recomendation depending on your application and use.
