Anyone using a 50/50 mix of Amsoil MTF/MTG

I'm thinking of trying this mix.

The online visc calculator I found gives me
11.5 cst @ 100C
62.8 cst @ 40C

I'm currently using a 60/40 mix of Redline MTL/MT90
Which is
12.4 cst @100C
67.8 cst @40C

So it seems like this would be slightly better in the winter. This is for my 6speed in the SpecV.
The car shifts ok but not great when cold.

Maybe I could go with a 60/40 Mix of MTG/MTF
that would save me from buying 4quarts..

My car calls for 75W85. So I don't know I don't really wanna find out the hard way.

A 5w30 and 75W-85 gear oil at 100°F, overlap viscosity ranges. That said, mixing is no issue if you want it slightly thicker and if you read the info on MTG:

MTG is recommended for synchronized manual transmissions and transaxles that require 75W-85

So I should have said - go with the MTG straight and a 60/40 mixture is fine.

Why don't they rate these fluids at 0C or -10 or something I can actually use.
I hope the calculator is wrong. I'm getting 498cst for 60/40 MTG/MTF @ 0c
I wonder if my transmission even gets to 100C during operation either.

Well I went ahead and ordered 2quarts of each so we'll see how it works out.

FWIW, I'm going to be running Amsoil MTF in someone's 2002 Honda S2000 starting late this week. Will keep everyone posted on the results. The car has about 30-40K on the factory fluid and is out-of-warranty.

Mola: I noticed that your MTL-P is a 75w-85 and is a high 11cst fluid. Its interesting how Amsoil recommends their 75w-90 viscosity "MTG" lube for 75w-85 applications...wouldn't their "MTG" product be too thick for the a 75w-85 app then? Please explain if possible.

Thanks,
Michael

Your MTL-P is listed as 82 CST at 40, which is thicker than what I'm currently using. Atleast acording to the calculator I used.

I don't have a problem when the cars warmed up.

I'm trying to get the best of both worlds which probably isn't possible but hey its worth a shot.

Is there any way to tell if a fluids too thin? other than

came today yay fast deliverly
Both look really thin(at room temp). Maybe I'll get it installed this weekend.

There is no issue with the low temperature performance of MTL-P. You want to make sure the oil doesn't thin or shear when the going gets hot.

Are you sure your Amsoil mix meets your low temp or 40C specs?

Its actually a problem with the transmission itself. I'm not sure any lube will make it shift the way I want it to. Maybe the Amsoil will be better than the Redline, maybe not. Its worth a shot. I was planning on changing the fluid soon anyways.

Oh I didn't know you actually had transmission issues.

I think you'll be fine in cold and remember apparent viscosity does not equal measured vis. Also, remember Amsoil recommends the MTG.

MW - Amsoil cheats a bit. MTG is 13.8 at 100°C, spec for an SAE 85 is 13.5. The transmission won't know the difference and don't try this with petroleum oil.

I put the Amsoil mix in tonight. So far it seems a bit better, but I only drove a few miles. I'll know more when it gets down around freezing.

I drove about 25miles before draining the old, it definently wasn't very hot. Maybe I coulda gotten away with straight Amsoil MTF.

That Redline mix really smells bad.

Bump for boredom.
Not much change in driveability.

It might be a little bit better cold. Its hard to accurately compare. My butt dyno needs recalibrated I guess.

All the gears work fine except 2nd. And its only the first 1 or 2 shifts of my drive. It just has that bad feeling crunch grind icky feeling. I actually use 2nd less than when I got the car. I used to try and keep the rpms as low as possible on a cold engine.
It hasnt gotten that cold here usually mid 20s low 30s, not that it does often.
I only put about 1400 miles on this mix so far.
The car just hit 30,000. Time for a new one

Gee if I warm my car up just a bit, that helps a lot.
But it just seems like the more I drive it the better it gets.
