Hi. I have a question. I have 2000 honda civic lx 5 speed with 236000 miles. I heard amsoil is one of the best synthetic motor oils, but I hear also if you use amsoil you can screw up smog/emission test? I don't know if that is truth or not? I wanna hear your opinion on this article. Any answer is welcome....

I had an 03. No, the AmsOil would be fine and won't have anything to do with your emissions or the cats/O2 sensors.

Personally, I always went 7500 miles on whatever. If you're springing 4 times the cost for AmsOil, what benefit do you plan on getting?

Why do you want to use 1 of the most expensive synthetic oils in a 11 years old 236k miles engine ? If you like to use syn oil in your Civic engine then any brand name that you can buy on sale will be good for 10-12k miles OCI for non-severe conditions.

My guess is he likes the claimed 25K oil life.

Or he just wants the best for his Civic cause he plans to keep it till the wheels come off.

I personally use Amsoil's best in my Civic since it was NEW. I plan to keep it for as long as possible, so ultimate engine durability is important to me. I'm also doing extended drains so the high price is stretched for miles on end.

It is indeed one of the best. The second part of your question is untrue and actually laughable. I don't see that you would gain anything this far on in the game by changing what you have been using up to this point.

You are probably better off using a cheaper synthetic like M1 or PP at 7500 intervals if you are going to drive it till the wheels fall off...

Amsoil can get REALLY spendy if you burn oil, which likely you do, after all it's a Honda...

Amsoil is a highly respected oil, all their grades.
NO it will not cause any emissions issues.
There are many internet/urban myths out there about alot of things.....and that Amsoil or any other major oil brand will cause emissions issues is nothing more than myth.
Please contact one of the Amsoil members on here and give them a chance to give you a price quote.

^I can see it now...

Oil "X" just was filled in my engine most recently, then my cat suddenly was clogged. Oil "X" sucks and "destroys" sensors and cats, did I mention the downstream 02 sensor went out too!

All the cars in my stable bought new, the LS400 had both syn and dino with double OCI on syn oil (6-7k/6mo with dino, 12-15k/12mo with syn), E430 had only syn with 12-13k/12mo OCI, S2000 had both conventional and synthetic and double OCI on syn oil. None had anything more expensive than M1 or PP or Synpower that I bought on sale for around $2/qt. The LS400 has more than 260k miles without any engine problem or transmission problem related to oil/ATF.

Now, if I track my S2000 then I may consider Amsoil or Redline. Since I don't track/race any of my cars, boutique oils are of no use for my driving needs. I do drive fast whenever I have a chance, such as 100+ MPH when I go to Vegas, but go with the flow on local highways.
