AMSOIL Filter for a 3.6 Dodge Challenger

Filter is from a Dodge 3.6 with 18,560 miles.
Filter was installed in October of 2022@15,340 miles

So 9 months on filter with 3200 miles, oil was AMSOIL 5W-20 OE

Mostly short trips, although the earlier bulk of miles on engine were all long road trips.

Pretty wavy IMO. I’ve had the best luck with the Mopar filters in the 3.6L. They come out fairly straight even after 8-9k miles.

Just my $0.02

You’re right
I was shocked after just 3200 miles.
I expected better
I have a Mobil 1 in there now.
After reviewing threads on here, I’ll probably just use the Mopar.

This one looks normal with slight waviness.

The OP’s post looks like the filter is slightly too long or the cap was over tightened. The waves imply the top and bottom cap have twisted from one another IMO.

You may be right
The filter was installed by a independent shop.
When I went to change filters, the filter was not attached to the cap- which over tightening, will cause the filter to come off the cap.
These caps are meant to be torqued to 18 lbs.( for my engine)
Glad I decided to change the oil myself from now on.
I bought a MITYVAC, torque wrench, etc.

I used a torque wrench @18 lbs for the oil cap- per manual.
Mobil 1 filter in there now, will post to this thread in a few months.
I have a Wix XP- it looks similar to a Royal Purple or AMSOIL.
I searched other threads, and some others have a pulled filter with around 8k, and no waves.
Over torquing the cap , causing the new filter to twist in the housing— I suspect is the root cause.

Little things like that make not want to ever let anyone work on your vehicle, but yourself

Typically, the cap on a cartridge type filter setup will bottom out and torquing over that specified torque really isn't going to make it turn barely anymore ... it will just make the cap tighter and much harder to remove the next time. If a cartridge filter actually gets "crushed down and twisted" during installation, then it's most likely due to the filter being a hair too long.

Incorrect alignment could contribute to 'crush-twist'.

The 3.6's element is set into the cap/housing, no?

Yes, and if the filter is a fraction too long, and you screw it too far down into the housing.

I doubt the shop used a torque wrench, they just screwed it all the way down till it felt good.
My wife’s Equinox has a short filter, and there are no torque settings required.

I don’t have a micrometer, or I would measure some filters.
One would think the filter length, would be uniform/universal.
I prefer the metal spin ons, after seeing this

You put the element into the cap, it snaps in- then set it in the housing.
It one of the most easy filter placements, I have ever seen.
I’m putting the blame on the shop, on this one.
I will see what it looks like next time I change.
It’s really so simple, I was dazed 😵‍💫 when I saw it twisted

What I'm saying is if you screwed the cap down by hand as tight as possible and then watched how much it turned beyond that point when torqued to spec, it won;t move much at all. The cap bottoms out before it hits the torque spec, and torquing the cap beyond the torque spec isn't going to make it move much more, if any, and therefore over torquing the cap doesn't cause the filter to "crush". A filter that is a bit too long will "crush and twist" when the cap it torqued to spec, or even just torqued to where it bottoms out, even if not fully to the torque spec.

You would think, but I'd bet there is some difference between brands if you could accurately measure them to the nearest 1000th inch. Even just production tolerances on the same brand/model may make them X +/-Y in length.
