Both mine say no oil,dry..


Must be that some pre-filters are not made to be oiled. Check manual first.

Dunno could be ,just checked my Craftsman manual says clean OR better yet replace every 25hrs,no mention of oiling the foam pre filter.


A Briggs tech says to follow this procedure on all Briggs engines....

Do you rewash the pre foam filters. Most times these pre foam filters will tear apart when washed with any type of oil coated.

Yes grass and dirt does start to restrict airflow that is why I wash and clean it!

I have used the same foam filter since March 2006 when my Deere was new. So far it is holding up just fine!!! I think impart due to that I am NOT using just any oil and NOT engine oil but oil made just for foam type filters see link in my other post on this.

Procedure is this. I carefully take apart the air cleaner being careful not to let any dirt get into the air inlet for the engine. I then soak a shop rag in gumout or similar and clean the engine air inlet and filter housing and air filter cover. Cover engine opening with clean rag or something to keep out dirt while you are working on this and close hood. I inspect the paper air filter for damage wear and dirt. I would then clean the paper filter if it was not too bad or replace if it was damaged or very dirty (so far this filter still looks brand new)

For the foam filter I hand wash it with warm soapy water normally some mild dish washing soap or similar being careful not to wash it so hard that it falls apart but enough to get it clean and oil free. I then put is someplace to dry usually overnight, once it is dry I then re-oil it and carefully squeeze excess oil out of it so that it is saturated but not drippy. I will sometimes let it air dry like that for a few minuets so that the oil starts to “dry” “get tacky” while I do some other maintenance such as check tire air pressure or lube other parts etc. Once I am done I then reinstall the foam filter then the paper filter and then the filter cover and I am ready to ride once again!

Now I have no delusions that the foam filter will last forever, and it will wear out one day. But for some of my time and a little bit of filter oil, I am getting better filtration for my ride and longer lasting paper filters as well. When it does start to fall apart I will buy a new one and start over but at as much as they cost, I will hold off buying a new one until it is needed so far I am doing fine.

Who reads the manuals????? I use those for cleaning up oil spills!!!

I am old enough and have used Amsoil long enough to remember when they had a Lifetime foam air filter for cars and I still have a can of that old filter oil in my garage, that is what got me thinking of using it to make the foam pre-filter better at its job since that oil and the new oil Amsoil has now; gets tacking / sticky so that the foam filter holds more dirt than they would dry.

I don't know or care what the manual says that is for regular people who wants regular maintenance on their rides. Like I said this is my baby and I am going way above what is regular or normal. other wise I would also still be using briggs oil filters and briggs brand only oil too!!

and before anyone asks where the "lifetime" filter is; I don't know I sold the car and it with it. Amsoil has since stop selling them as well. I did have that filter in my 1967 Plymouth Sport Fury with a 383 cammando V8 with a huge 4 bbl carb for about 5 years before I sold the car. It held up fine the whole time I had it. Car was once clocked by the highway patrol at about 140 mph. I was much younger then!!! and had hair!!

What Braind.. HP..engine..V-Twin?


60" Hustler Z with 25 hp Kawasaki 2 cylinder. Motor manual says change oil every 100 hrs and filter every 200 hours.
