Amsoil EAO problem?

ON, Canada eh?
So I ran out of EAO's and I had to use a Hyundai OEM filter. This is ok because the OEM filters are extremely well built.

What I have been noticing though is they might be better than the EAO's for drain back and here's why.

My filter isn't mounted vertically, it is horizontal and I noticed that with the EAO that the oil pressure drops very quickly when I shut the engine off and the gauge makes a slow motion to reach 100 PSI when I start the engine cold.

With the OEM filter the gauge slowly falls to 0 when the engine is shut down and when I start it up it quickly hits 100 and then falls to 85-90 and stays there.

Also even in the 90 degree heat we are seeing here in the day time right now I would have a slight lifter tick for 1-2 seconds with the EAO and I'm not getting this with the OEM filter.

I'm thinking the EAO might be leaking down on shut-down and not stopping the oil from flowing back into the filter like the OEM is.

If this is the case I'm not happy about it because the filters are very expensive. While I have seen excellent filtration results from them I would have to stop using them if they aren't sealing properly.

I'm using the EAO-20 for my application and thought I would post this to see if others are having the same problem.

I know it wasn't a one off filter because I had purchased like 10 or something together and they were all doing this.

I have noticed the same thing and quit buying the EaO20 for this reason. All the new ones I tested by blowing into the center tube with my mouth, all leaked badly. But other brands of this same filter type sealed well, even the cheapo Supertech. If Amsoil is going to sell oil filters for $15+ each, the ADBV should work better than this! I wonder if it is QC or design problem with so many EaO20's having the same issue.

I have noticed the same problem with the EAO20 in my Accord as well, whenever I start the car up the light stays on for about 3 seconds and I can hear a little valve clatter which disappears right when the light goes out. This has happened with several different brands of filters in the past but I have found that the Purolator Pureone definitely has the best ADBV, with those the oil light is out practically at the same time the starter stops working.

I need to check with the ASTM to see if they have updated their blowing into the center tube by mouth test.

I'm glad I'm not the only one... It never used to be like this because I have been using the 20's for a long time without incident.

I think someone like Gary or Pablo needs to get on the horn to Amsoil and tell 'em they might have a QC issue.

Thanks guys for posting your experiences. I love the filters but will stay OEM if this is going to continue.

Johnny, let me know what ASTM says!

It's probably a WIX filter.

It may well be a lot thing. I've experienced slight rattles with EaO's, WIX, PureOne ..surely other filters with nitrile valves.

Given that I would think that whomever produces the EaO for that # doesn't run the same part number too frequently, it is quite possible for you to have multiple orders of the same filter over a given span of time that may well be from the same lot.

(there's a little smile/grin here) While I can surely grant the "blow test" validity with a positive result, it would be harder to assign it full validation credentials.

I have sent Pablo the details of my order and I guess he is going to check with Amsoil.

Thanks for adding to this thread Gary.

This is what my filter looks like inside if it helps any...

I'm going to contact Amsoil technical as per the advice of the board sponsors and see what happens from there.

I hope they fix this problem because I really like the filters, if not then I will have to go back to the Hyundai OEM.

I know a lot of people don't think the idea of blowing in the hole is a scientific way to tell about the filter but I just did that to 3 OEM Hyundai filters I have and they are all solid.

I won't mention this to Amsoil for fear I will look like a crazy person but thought y'all would want to know.

Yup... I don't have pictures of one or I would show you...

I have cut both open and they are identical except the media in the EAO looks a bit thicker.

It should also have a mesh backing if it's like the EaO42 I opened awhile back. Pretty robust design up there with the Euro spec'd filters.

Crazy person, you'd be crazy not to mention it for what their filters cost. Go for it!

I might come up with a contraption that I can screw into a filter and use a tire pressure gauge type thing on the other end and show my OEM holding pressure and the EAO not. Take a picture of it and include it in my correspondence with them.

A little better than me blowing into the filter.

Yes the screen supports it from the inside.
