Will I have any problems using Amsoil universal ATF in my 98 Mark VIII which has only seen Mercon 5 fluid/flushes for 80,000 miles? Some people say the 4r70w transmission wasn't designed to use a full synthetic and the clutches don't take well to a full synthetic atf?

I've bought a number of used cars over the past years, most with 100,000 miles on them. Changed to the AMSOIL ATF and never had a problem. Well, at least never had a problem associated with the oil, transmission fluid, Power Steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, gear lube.

All the better, it should be relatively clean. The "clutches" should be fine, just allow a day or two for setting in. I'm not sure what kind of logic was used in 1998, but an ECU reset should not be necessary - undummy will know for sure.

Transmission doesn't care what basestock it sees, as long as it meets the minimal requirements for the spec.

Use the Amsoil, or any other Full Synthetic that mentions Mercon-V. M1, Valvoline, Amalie, Redline,....are some others.

Its been in my Mothers 1993 Chevy Lumina since about 1994 with less then 10,000 miles if I recall, 81,000 miles to date and still ticking. Had them drop the pan and change the filter about 75,000 miles last fall. It was not changed back in '94 because the trans shop said it was unnecessary. Pan was like new on the inside, put in a Wix filter and its good for the rest of its life.

btw - same shop in '94 and 2006 did the work, same tech also.

It won't know the difference between full, partial syn or regular fluid. Except for better longevity.

As long as the synthetic ATF meets the fluid definition set by the manufacturer, it work work, it will work very well.

My dad mistakenly put synthetic Dexron III in a Honda that required Z-1, and shifting suffered, but when I put synthetic ATF that matched the OE specification, the cars ran extremely well.

I used it in my Dodge Cummins Six speed manual (2006) and loved it. Using Redline right now, though. Will go back to Amsoil later however.

Mike: Are you saying that you ran Amsoil from 10K til 75K and then changed the fluid (to Amsoil again) or are you saying you re-installed the used Amsoil?
I changed my Buick Centurys original fluid to Mobil 1 at 36K and now have 86K. I don't know whether to go to 60K on this fluid or change it soon (before the cold weather). The M1 has performed flawlessly and still looks red and smells OK. I also added Lubegard Red approx. 20 or 25K ago. I would think that if regular ATF is good for 30K than synthetic should be good for 60K. What do you guys think?

I will use Amsoil ATF in my Accord but the M1 was easier to find when I was changing out the Buicks. The M1 is excellent in the GM 4T65E transmission.

Amsoil is rated for 50K severe and 100K for normal conditions. However that means you have fine wear metals floating around in the ATF for many many miles even if the fluid is in fine condition. So a Magnefine filter will help here, or to replenish the fluid from time to time to remove fluid with wear metals present and replace with fresh.
