This might be kind of a late post.I always stop at Battlefeild HD.in Gettysburg before heading to the York open house. To my amazement in the parts display area there was a shelf full of Amsoil.I did not know Harley dealers where allowed to sell anything else but HD. lubricants Not that Iam complaining, nice they give their customers choices.

They can sell whatever lubricants they like. Unfortunately, most just follow the MoCo suggestion and stick with only HD lubes. If they went back to their service dept and took a poll on what all the mechanics use in their personal bikes...they might add Vtwin & Amsoil..because very few I have talked to use Syn3 or HD360.

which brand sells the most at your shop?

The dino HD360/Formula+ oil is by far the biggest seller. We sell probably 3 qts of HD360/F+ for every qt of SYN3, and probably 6 qts of HD360/F+ for every qt of Redline. Bel-Ray isn't much of a mover, but we've seen it quiet down the new 6-speed 5th gear noise a bit so we carry it.
This comes out to roughly 2 qts dino for every qt. of synthetic.

Yes, they can sell other oils. However, several AMSOIL Dealers have told me they may have their sponsored shops stop stocking AMSOIL. They are selling so much AMSOIL and so little Harley oil that they are in danger of losing their overall discount on parts and accessories.

$14.95/qt?! Holy smokes! I think it goes for between $8.50 and $8.95/qt by us depending on which oil it is. Still pricey, but cheaper than SYN3.

Agreed- that is pretty steep. I asked why they sold it for so much & got no real answer other than "it's a high quality oil." Well yeah, I agree, but so is Mobil 1 and it's $4 a qt. at Wally World...

Which Mobil 1 are you talking about, the car oil or the V-Twin one? I'm asking because I'd like to have it ordered in one of the Wally's in the area--I never found the V-Twin oil on the shelf, but the Mobil 1 site lists it as carried by Wally.

As for Amsoil, depending of how many oil changes you do a year, it can be bought for about $7 or less including shipping, if you include the "preferred customer" fee that gives you about 25% off and include shipping. I haven't tried yet but I'm thinking about it. Check their website and see if it's worth.

I was referring to the car oil, 15W-50, which is what I use. V-Twin is $8.49 a qt at my Wally World, but the specs look pretty close between the two so I use the 15W-50 for half the money. I'll be doing an oil analysis on it in a few months to see how well it's doing. Since oil in a HD engine mainly has to deal with heat (air-cooling) most any syn will work well in them.

I've looked at Amsoil's website before, and my dealer put it in my bike at the 1k service. (Got the 1k free.)
Since I don't care about extended intervals, all I need is a good syn that'll last 4k-5k miles between OCI's, & $4 a qt Mobil 1 fills the bill.

Does the auto Mobil 1 15W-50 have moly? Also how much anti-wear stuff it has? UOA would be interesting. I wouldn't change the oil any later than what the manufacturer asks for (in my case 6k miles), but if a UOA shows that a syn does good enough at that mileage I'd change it at 6k instead of 3k.

Not sure about moly (I did read somewhere that it does indeed have it, I just can't remember where) but for ZDDP I found this on Mobil's website:
"Mobil 1 15W-50 provides higher viscosity, designed to provide extra protection for performance vehicles and vehicles that operate in severe service, such as towing, hauling and racing. Additionally, Mobil 1 15W-50 contains higher levels of anti-wear (ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate) that may be required for certain racing applications and camshaft designs."

Here's a good thread about silver-cap 15W-50:

Also, in my '07 owner's manual HD says if you don't use "their" oil

you can use a CD, CE, or CF-rated diesel engine oil, and M1 15W-50 is rated CF.

V-twin and Racing 4T have more moly than Mobil 1 PCMO's do.

For the sake of Pete, when will folks get over this ridiculous moly thing? Must we all remain ridiculously ignorant on this issue for eternity?

Either Mobil1 15w50 or 20w50Vtwin will run fine as will the Amsoil. All are high quality oils that have a strong enough additive pack to go 5000 miles in a Harley. If you are into extended drains I would choose the Amsoil with an Amsoil filter only. But you will save a few $$ if you use the M1 15w50 and a stock HD filter.

My Harley Dealer now stocks Amsoil as well.

I don't know if they will put it out front on the shelf, but I'm going to send everyone I know in there to ask for it now.
