I need some help deciding on oil. I want to get one synthetic that I can use year-round in everything from high HP tractors to pick-ups to small gas engines. I had planned to switch everything to Rotella 5W-40 syn, but the price has really gone up! The specs look pretty good for the Amsoil and the total cost is $0.40/gal cheaper. I have not really found any good reason to not go with this oil, but I'm open to suggestions/opinions. Thanks for any guidance!

This oil is designed for the new 2007 diesel oil specs. Me personally, I see no reason to use it unless you are also using it in a 2007 diesel engine. It is SM spec'd for gas engines as well, so it will serve your gas engines well, but not so sure yet about extended drain intervals since the TBN of CJ-4 oils is lower.
If you are not planning on extended drain intervals, and prefer the 5w-40 weight, then I see no problem with using it.

I'm not sure about your statement on pricing of only $.40 a gallon. Last time I bought Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 at Walmart I got 8 galoons at $15.97 per gallon. The list on the excellent Amsoil 5W40 CJ-4 had it listing at a little over $27.00 a gallon, with a discount for preferred customers. Even with the discount, the Amsoil would still be substantially more $ per gallon. BTW, I run the Rotella Syn plus LC20 in our 1998 Dodge Cummins dually and our John Deere lawn equipment. Currently run Amsoil Euro Formula 5W40 and LC20 in our 2000 Passat, but will be switching to German Castrol at the next OCI.

Local Walmarts only carry Rotella syn in quarts and they can't get it in gallons(I asked). I priced the Amsoil and Rotella in a 55 gal drum including tax and shipping. I called 3 different suppliers for the rotella and $.40 more than Amsoil was the cheapest I can get. I, too, was surprised.

Amsoil is indeed a great oil, if you are not going with extended oil changes, then go with the DEO 5w-40. If you want to save a few dollars, the 10w-40 AMO may fulfill your needs just as much.

You might price Schaeffers 9000 as well.
Did you look at the Amsoil synthetic HDEO 15W40? We have used it for over 4 years in out diesel trucks, vans, cars, heavy equipment, small diesel tractors, mowers and hot rods. Very flexible oil and not much more expensive that Rotella T Synthetic 5w40.
