Which oil should I run? Car has low miles. Would 0w20 cause any harm? I believe ford recommend 5w30 in 1997.

In a V8 muscle car,i probably would not,just wouldn't trust
the film strength from a 20w,i'd stick with what the manufacture
recommends..

AEHaas can afford to ignore the Ferrari/Maybach/Unobtainium Super Sport owner's manual. Can you?

ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FORD VEHICLES

Engine Oil Recommendations For
Ford Vehicle Applications & Engines

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information supplied by Ford Motor Company on recommended engine oil for Ford engines. Previously AERA published Technical Bulletin TB 1738, the information in this bulletin is an update to that bulletin. This latest information should be highly considered as quality improvements have been made to most engine oils. The current engine oil used by Ford during the vehicle manufacturing process is SAE 5W-20 Motorcraft oil. This oil may also be used for older vehicles described in chart 1 below.

The engine oil recommended for use in 2001 vehicles is SAE 5W-20 motor oil. This oil has an improved formulation to improve fuel economy. This oil can also be used to service some previous model year vehicles.

Use SAE 5W-20 engine oil at recommended oil change intervals for 2001 vehicles, with the exception of the following vehicles listed in the Exception 2001 Vehicles chart.
All 2001 vehicles other than those listed in the Exception 2001 Vehicles chart are being filled with SAE 5W-20 motor oil at the factory and should also be serviced with SAE 5W-20 oil.

Ford specifies 5w-20 for your car.

Hmmm.... tough choice. Pablo the Amsoil dealer, extrapolating one person's experience with exotic engines, or a bunch of dumb engineers at Ford who DESIGNED YOUR ENGINE?

So are you saying 0w-20 will harm his engine?

What extrapolating am I doing??? Maybe I missed that.

Here is what the Amsoil guide says:

Quote:
Engine Oil
Grade 1......API*
100% Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil
SAE 5W-20 XL Synthetic Motor Oil
SAE 0W-30 Synthetic Signature Series Oil
All Temps......5W-20[1]

1. Use Ford part no. XO-5W20-QSP or equivalent
motor oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C930-H.

AEHaas has disproved that...

so what, they only recommend a 20w for improve fuel economy, wile
sacrificing bearing wear in a hard driven v8,but i really don't
care, not my car he can do what he wants.

why don't they run a 20w in the 4.0's and 5.0's then if
"AEHaas has disproved that"..

How about those dumb engineers at Ford who originally speced 5w-30 for this engine before Ford went all CAFE crazy?

This engine can live on Xw-20 or Xw-30 (as Pablo indicated). Enough said.

The 97 GT will be fine with the 5w20.

The EARLY EARLY 93-95 4.6L motors had problems with valve stem seals, and they would burn that 5w20 in short order.

Run what you want, 5w30 or 5w20, whatever is cheaper.

You will not notice a difference in fuel mileage with either. When I drove modular vehicles, I bought the 5w20 only because walmart had it for cheap (motorcraft brand).

My camshaft grinder runs Mobil 1 0w20 in his 302, which on occasion saw the far side of 8,000RPM. This is the stock 14x,xxx mile bottom-end. Less pumping power = more power to the tires. His argument was that the 0w20 is a far better oil than anything produced when that engine was new. On a tear-down, there was no wear in any areas that would indicate a failure of the lubricant.

This car was driven harder than the vehicle in question will likely EVER be driven.

I also ran Mobil's 0w20 in my 302 when I unfortunately had to run it in the winter. Stock bottom-end, engine holds 38-40psi hot at idle, has 330,000Km on it, and the insides are still spotless.

Any of oil's that Pablo posted will work flawlessly in your GT.
The Amsoil 0W-20 is a very robust oil. Just poured it into the Wifes 04 Navigator with a 5.4L V8. Runs like silk. Will run a UOA at 5k miles.

Yes. In fact, I already did. Look at all the UOA's for my 96 Saturn that where 20wt oil was used, mainly the older Pennzoil ones. Lowly Pennzoil shows a better UOA than M1.

Those cars were never spec'd for 20wt oils. The car is sidelined due to trans issues. The engine runs great and continually achieves 40+MPG.
