So Ford recommends 5W-20 in my '04 Super Duty V-10. But with winter approaching here in Canada, I'm leaning towards running Amsoil 0W-20. Does anyone see a problem with this? On Amsoil's website, it doesn't appear that their oil meets the Ford spec?? Could this be??

Amsoil only recommends the viscosities Ford recommends. 0W-20 is not the recommended viscosity, so no way would Amsoil recommend it.

That said, 0W-20 will work great in place of 5W-20.

Yeah I see no real issue using a really high quality 0W-anything in place of the typical 5W- 10W- recommended weights.

Unless it has a warranty of course.

Do any of their oils certify the Ford spec.?

Use the oil if you want, but 0w-20 cannot meet the Ford spec. The Ford specs are for a specific oil weight.
Example for your truck...
"Manufacturer recommends motor oil that is formulated to meet Ford specification WSS-M2C930-A."
http://www.ilma.org/resources/ford_service_fill_specs.pdf
WSS-M2C930-A is 5w20. ( WSS-M2C930-A was replaced with the current spec WSS-M2C945-A, but is also specific 5W-20)

Thanks for posting that carwreck!

All three Amsoil 5W-20's meet Ford WSS-M2C945-A and WSS-M2C930-A, to answer the question above.

That thing will run fine on the Amsoil 0w20. Take care this winter

Well I went ahead and bought 8 gallons (2 cases) of the 0W-20 and it actually says on the jugs that it replaces 5W-20 in Fords, and other makes.

So I guess that's like recommending it, in a round about way?!

Well I have over 8000miles on the Amsoil 0W-20 Signature Series oil. Immediately following the oil change last month, I noticed the engine was quieter upon start-up. Very happy with my choice. Thanks Guys!

Yeah, this year has averaged about that. Working on the pipeline and with my F350 V10 weighing over 12,000 lbs and getting about 9mpg, I'm glad the company supplies all fuel!

Many oil manufacturers say their 0w20 is fine for the Ford 5w20 spec while only the 5w20 is actually approved.

Mobil 1 seem to indicate that Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 is approved. Might be worth checking exactly what the bottle says.

This might be a good choice for you if it is approved as it is highly rated for your cold starts.

Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy synthetic oil meets or exceeds the requirements of:
ACEA A1/B1
API SN, SM, SL, SJ
ILSAC GF-5
Ford WSS-M2C945-A

According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy is of the following quality level:
Ford WSS-M2C930-A
General Motors GM 6094M
API CF

That may be, but earlier in the year I tried Mobil 1 5W-20 and I burned over a quart in around 3000miles. I will never buy Mobil 1 again. Just my experience. Havent consumed any significant amount of this Amsoil in 8000miles.

Interesting.

What oil were you using before M1? I presume no problems before then?

What mileage do you have? Any idea of how far you'll push the Amsoil?

1st thing, I checked my service records and I put in the Amsoil on Oct6 @ 64K, and today I have on 71,000 miles. Not as much as I thought.

I was always doing 4000mile OCI since I bought the truck (Dec'11 with 31,000miles) with whichever conventional 5W-20 was on sale. Then in spring I tried Mobil 1 and ran it 4000miles too. It was at the "add" line at that time so I figured I would change it. Won't by it again. I know many people swear by it, and that's fine. I don't.

I work 400miles from home, so doing oil changes with Amsoil isn't the easiest thing to do. I will change it when I get home at Christmas time. Likely will have around 10,000 miles on it by then. Now that its getting cold, the truck idles an awful lot too, like all day!

UPDATE!!!

I am at home for 1 day (today), and checked my oil and its at the add line. I have exactly 7000miles on this Amsoil Signature Series 0W-20, with ALOT of idle time too. Atleast 2 hours/day idling since I put in this oil on Oct 6, and a couple days it has idled 10hrs. I may not get home again till Christmas. Would you guys change it out today (I have plenty more Amsoil in my stash), or just add a quart and sleep well at night. I need an answer within a couple hours. Lets hear opinions!

Just add whatever it's low and don't sweat it. Adding oil will replenish tbn and additives.
You may be smart to get a few uoa done with this oil. It could be that you can stretch out the interval substantially, like closer to 15000 miles OR you may learn that it's depleted and needs changed. Either way it's good info to have.
I thinks this oil advertises up to 25000 mile intervals so for you it may be smart to have uoa done. Could save you alot of work. Jmo

Agree with Clevy, you'll be refreshing the add pack plenty, and despite the idling, you obviously have a ton of hwy miles on the oil. I'd just add a quart and call it good.
