Americans are leaving in record numbers.

This is often cited but not applicable. Your taking your US dollars and living somewhere with a lower cost of living. Not the same.

Even in developing nations you can have access to mostly the same services if you can afford to pay, and at a fraction of the cost of here.

Also to say that living somewhere in Western Europe the standard is lower simply means you have never been to Western Europe. Different, yes. Lower, not really.
I think what they are saying is that if you're poor in America, you're still far better off than living in most of the world. It's looking at it as simply - poor US citizen vs poor non-US citizen and comparing their quality of life, which is really subjective to a large extent.

I've never understood why any retiree would consider moving abroad assuming they have kids and grandkids in the US. You'd rather waste away on a beach instead of enjoy the riches of spending time with those you love? I'm not opposed to vacations, even extended vacations, but permanent relocation? No thanks.
To each their own. My wife and I were SERIOUSLY considering Northern Florida in 2021. Even had contracts on a house but we never signed. We choose Northern Florida so still to be within a 4 hour os so drive from the kids.

Then we chickened out. Glad we did, moved to a great place and community on the South East Coast of North Carolina.
The trip is almost the same to my son at 4 hours but in the meantime my daughter moved to VA so our move worked out good.
4 hours to our son and 5 to our daughter. I still miss being 1 hr from my son and 2 from my daughter but things changed on her part anyway to VA so it worked out ok.
I mentioned in the EV section with our gas SUV we still do my sons house on daily trips, 4 hours there 4 or 5 to visit and 4 back home. Though now he has a bigger home and guest room for this year. Daugher we always stay over night. It's nice being in driving distance.

What they are saying is the median income in Costa Rica is $18,000 a year, or Mexico $12,000 a year. When you add up everything for people on social assistance - SNAP, housing assistance, healthcare, the bottom 20% in the US are likely still ahead of the median most other places that have no safety net.

However when a retiree or similar takes there $50K a year income to one of these places, there no longer median. There likely in the top 90% there. Where $50K / year here might get you a double wide in the Midwest somewhere.

Again not saying anyone should or should not, but its just taken out of context.

If you have some in demand skills and can make a family income up in the $200k+ US range, almost any country is pretty nice from what I've seen.

I think what's scaring some people out is their perception that authoritarianism is rising, and freedom from religion is decreasing in the US, and that it doesn't seem to matter to a significant minority of people. We can't debate this on BITOG, but I think that is cause of some migration.

So if they have the skills or money, they can go where they want, to a place that they feel is better for them and their family. Everyone's opinions and views on this are different, and that's fine too.

Perception is being overblown and exploited.

There are some rights under attack as always. Ref 2nd Amendment. But that seems to get glossed over..........

Being a global traveler - I have known several who did this - and a high % did it to be that “10” with the young wife …
One being a retired guy who recently moved back to Texas to be near the Houston medical center - he has 3 sets of kids and 2 sets of grandchildren 😵‍💫
Ya’ll be careful now 🤔

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
You have no clue. Honestly, no clue.
I can own firearms there. I have already looked into the shooting clubs in the area. I can shoot at the Army range and shoot whatever they have out at the time - just pay for the ammo. Do you have an open invite to the Army or Navy ranges here guy?

Internet and connectivity- uh, we talk daily to family over the internet phone apps. They had 5G when the US companies were talking about "some day" we'll have it. They had cell phones before we did in the US. Funny how the US Gov restricts that stuff more than most countries. It ain't all Cuba and Iran or Somalia.

As for why, I've already spent a good amount of time living/working there for the US Gov (not as a tourist). I have family and friends there. My money can go a long, long way there. And people treat me well. Still a farang, but one who just mingles in.
And I spent my entire working life defending the US directly.

Newsflash!

Not all families have the relationships and dynamics of “The Waltons.”

You need to read John Locke. It is essential in any free society, for any individual in that society to challenge authority. It is an absolute right.
