May not be this way where you're at, but in middle GA Amazon is delivering their own packages, not USPS.My niece just got started with USPS as a delivery person so I have firsthand knowledge…the headline doesn’t make sense.
USPS delivers Amazon’s packages, not the other way around. Someone’s a little silly!
I’m guessing they meant to say “Amazon is the USPS’s largest volume client”.
I know it for a fact as I was at my brother’s house as my niece worked a Sunday shift just two days ago. She said it was “the package shift”; out of 300+ packages, only a dozen or so weren’t Amazon. This is in a fairly small town here in Vermont so I can only imagine the volume and personnel needed elsewhere.
This is definitely regional. In my area, Amazon has been delivering 90% of their own orders for 5+ years. Occasionally USPS or UPS will deliver an order. Just in our neighborhood, we live on the main street which leads to (2) other streets (totaling ~3 typical city "blocks") but no exit, so you have to come back out our street. I can get an Amazon delivery and it can be 45 minutes before the driver comes back out from making so many other deliveries to neighbors. There's also times we've gotten 2 or 3 different deliveries from Amazon in the same day.USPS delivers Amazon’s packages, not the other way around. Someone’s a little silly!
This is true. We live in a relatively small town. My Amazon packages arrive either UPS for USPS. Our oldest son lives in a large city. The vast majority of his Amazon packages arrive via an Amazon truck. You guys are describing the issue that is causing USPS the problems. Amazon is delivering in cities where it's easier to make more stops and therefore lower cost per delivery.
USPS is legally bound to deliver to EVERYONE, regardless of location. So Amazon is taking the low lying fruit, and leaving the high cost delivery to USPS.
The USPS report to congress the other day indicates they might need as much a 9B to cover for their losses due to this delivery model.

Yes, here also. I have not seen a USPS delivered Amazon package in ages.May not be this way where you're at, but in middle GA Amazon is delivering their own packages, not USPS.
Can't upvote this enough. It's part of the infrastructure that we the people pool together to support because it helps our businesses and ourselves to flourish.IMO, USPS is a SERVICE to the ENTIRE US, and should not be run as a profit center. If you are interested, look up the history of why the USPS was founded and enacted under the US CONSTITUTION (under Article I, Section 8, Clause 7)
Being a small town probably has something to do with what you're seeing over there. In more densely populated areas, with large Amazon distribution centers nearby, Amazon does their own deliveries or uses Amazon Flex drivers. Around here, 5-10 years ago, most Amazon packages were delivered by USPS. Now it's less than 5%.This is in a fairly small town here in Vermont so I can only imagine the volume and personnel needed elsewhere.
Yes, but it should not be taken advantage of by private business or else it'll become a major loss center and us the tax payers will have to foot the bill, in addition to what we are already paying.IMO, USPS is a SERVICE to the ENTIRE US, and should not be run as a profit center.
But they give Amazon a giant discount - which does not need to be disclosed - even via FOIA. So IMHO they shouldn't get one dime of taxpayer money. There already operating as a private business.USPS is legally bound to deliver to EVERYONE, regardless of location. Because that was the only means of communication back then. We have long since surpassed this need. It also says "congress has the right to establish post offices", not the requirement.IMO, USPS is a SERVICE to the ENTIRE US, and should not be run as a profit center. and is Constitutionally mandated.
From the article:
"USPS is delivering 110 billion fewer pieces of mail than it did 18 years ago. Factoring in today’s prices, that drop in volume accounts for an $85 billion loss in revenue."
AND
"In June, the United Nations’ Universal Postal Union said international mail volume coming into the United States fell by more than 80% once the Trump administration eliminated a tariff exemption for small packages went into effect. Nearly 90 postal operators across the world have suspended some or all services to the United States for now."
It's hard to see the USPS as a profit center when it's CORE mission is to deliver mail. It has no shareholders OTHER THAN every US citizen living ANYWHERE in the US. Again, IMO, it doesn't matter if the USPS makes money or loses money - it is a CORE tenet of our nation and is Constitutionally mandated.
I see USPS as a service for every US citizen, just as the nation's defense is for every US citizen. Some things cost money and don't turn a profit - that is just life in this world.
My understanding is its a big money maker for them - because it doesn't need to be sorted - just stuffed in every box.Supermarket flyers and junk mail is probably their biggest customers.
I get sooooo much junk advertising and flyers, fast food coupons, etc…
