Am I obsessing over nothing with esters?

Question, why dont you leave the car running? I used to do delivery and I would leave my cars running about 6 hours at a time, no problems, and I only used beaters. I changed the oil with bulk 5w30 from the dealership I worked at every 2k (probably overkill but it was free) Keep an extra key in your pocket so you can lock the doors.

My favorite all time delivery car was an 89 cutlass ciera, 3300 v6, towing package, ac, auto everything, and $600 with 120K on it.

Anyway, do we really know that GC is group V?

If you are going to use an expensive oil - extend it out!

Santo: I leave the car running when I deliver to houses. We do room service to 2 hotels, and have 5 hotels total within 1 block. My personal rule is: If I'm out of sight of my car, or on the second level of an apartment complex where I can't quickly get back to it, my car is turned off and locked. Back at the restaurant, down time between deliveries can range from 1-60 minutes or more. I really have no way of knowing, so it's more economocal (and safer) to leave the car off when I'm in the store. But I do leave it running when I feel its safe to.

I'm running a 5k mile OCI right now, and will be getting the oil analyzed. I don't want to run it any longer than that in severe service without an analysis telling me its okay.

MolaKule, I thought that with Mobil 1 SuperSyn, esters are no longer in use?

Palut...My son also delivers pizza with his 95 Alti. He got it with 103K and it currently is above 207K miles. Regular 3.5-4K changes with Pennzoil or SuperTech 10W30 and filter keeps it on the road.

But, he is on his 3rd starter and 2nd alternator. Have you been delivering long, what repairs have you had to make?

I've been delivering since the end of April, so roughly 5 or 6 months, and haven't had to make any repairs at all, just maintenance.

Is Castrol Syntec and Mobil 1 SuperSyn the ester additive package? and Sikolene approx 20% diester and PAO, although not ester based oils contain sufficient esters for bonding along with Castrol Start UP mineral and esters.

The Supersyn story below if interested
SuperSynTM was developed by our researchers several years ago, but its use in Mobil 1 initially came about as a result of requests from the drag-racing community. NHRA "funny cars" have supercharged engines fueled with nitro-methane, which produce upwards of 5,000 horsepower for very brief periods of time - just long enough to get the car down the quarter-mile drag strip. As you can imagine, the internal pressures and strains on the engine's moving parts are tremendous, and engine failure is common.

Using an experimental Mobil 1 formulation with the addition of the SuperSynTM system, the drag-racers found that engine bearings and other lubricated parts were lasting longer. In fact, in one case where an "over-fueled" engine literally blew apart, the connecting rod bearings were deformed by the incredible pressure but the Mobil 1 motor oil still held up!

Mobil 1 with SuperSynTM was also used in NASCAR race cars under super-heated racing conditions, and it provided remarkable performance and protection.

Enhanced Protection

Realizing that SuperSynTM could add an extra element of protection to road-going passenger cars, our engineers began the development of a new formulation of Mobil 1. Combined with a proprietary additive system, the SuperSynTM anti-wear system offers a strong line of defense against engine wear during everyday driving or even in extreme situations

Synthetic oils enable Royal Purple to make superior lubricants, but it is Royal Purple's advanced Synerlec® additive technology that gives its lubricants their amazing performance advantages. Synerlec® additive technology truly is beyond synthetic.™

Royal Purple again I assume Synerlec is ester based

Synerlec® additive technology forms a tough, slippery, synthetic film on all metal surfaces. This proprietary film significantly improves lubrication: first, by increasing the oil film's thickness, and second, by increasing the oil film's toughness, both of which help to prevent metal-to-metal contact. It displaces moisture from metal surfaces and protects all metals against rust and corrosion. It also fortifies the oil against the detrimental effects of heat, which causes oil to oxidize.

A common fallicy perpetrated by some people. Until Mobil gets their PAO/AN formulation fleet tested, they will be using PAO/esters. On another thread I stated even with AN's, a certain amount of esters will still have to used for seal swell, additive solubility, friction reduction, etc.

Molakule, I'm constantly amazed at the good news you bring us! I am one of those people who believed that Mobil 1 had no esters. Do you have any idea how much ester content Mobil 1 has, and if it varies by viscosity?

Hi.
Try Motul 8100 0w-40 or Motul 300v 5w30 both ester engine oils.300v bit over kill for a street car but excellent protection and it is 100% Ester base.

Me thinks Castrol GTX Start-Up Oil www.castrolusa.com is the same as Castrol Magnatec Oil www.castrol.com.au But only available in Australia as Grade 10w40 non-synthetic oil, Its just a Sales Gimmick to con drivers, and boost sales. Get a bit of steel dip it in oil hang it up over nite come out next morning Check it out and it will still have a film of oil on it, its all about Oil Companies Charging & making more Money..Yep con the consumer... Go Port Power 2004.

Good idea, but I wonder if it makes a difference that the oil is at least 100 degrees F hotter in the engine when shut down?

I do think the ester component in Start Up is a great idea, but is there enough to do the job? And is it worth the price? Depending on how much ester is in Start Up, you might be better off putting a pint of Redline into some low priced oil like Havoline.

TallPaul,

I assume Castrol Boffins have an add pack to suit mineral ester combination.

With AN v Ester test if the wrong add pack can make the ester underform, then this could happen with a dose of RL (pure speculation).

I'm not sure what a semi achieves but Magnatec used in circumstances of short journeys and cold starts may make sense and is a big seller in UK as its not warm and you end up in sea if drive too far.

< or = 20% by weight, depending on viscosity and what characteristics they want in the final formulation.
